You need to make sure you have the packages installed to compile the kernel module for the Nvidia drivers, as indicated by the error message at the end.

It's been a while since I've used Mandrake/Mandriva, so I do not recall exactly how the package management works, but you need to make sure you have 'binutils', 'gcc', 'make', the correct 'linux-headers' for the version of the kernel that you are running, and the Xserver development files (usually called something along the lines of 'xserver-xorg-dev'.

There may be more that you need, but that should get you a bit further, anyway. You can always post here again with any further messages you get when trying to get running.

Don't worry about the kernel-legacy, but I would remove the nvidia one - that looks like an older driver.

The 'linux-headers' I mentioned earlier may be called 'kernel-headers' on your distro.

Just did a bit of Googling, and I found this link;

http://www.mandrake.tips.4.free.fr/nvidiainst.html

Looks to be a pretty good guide to installing the drivers on your distro. The guy has even made the page so that it is viewable with one of the text-mode web-browsers, like lynx, so you can read it without having X running ;-)

Looks like you've extracted the binutils rpm into a folder on your desktop instead of installing it.

root@whirr:~# which ld
/usr/bin/ld

That seems to be the normal place for it. Probably not a good idea to just copy it there, as the other files from the binutils rpm will need to go in their correct places too. I believe you need to do a 'urpmi binutils'

Sorry, You seem to have mis-understood me.

'ld' is a command, which usually is in the /usr/bin directory, along with a whole load of other commands.

Delete that ld directory you have made.

the 'urpmi' command is used to install the files that are in *.rpm files.

Having done a little reading around, I believe you can actually select packages (rpm files) to be installed from within the Mandriva Control Centre. It's the Software Management section, I think. That should give you some form of list of packages that can be installed. Install 'binutils' from there.

You should also be able to install 'make', 'gcc' and 'kernel-source' in there.

I'm pretty sure that Mandriva ships a binutils RPM. You need to install that RPM, or contact the appropriate Mandriva support group for assistance.

There should be a 'binutils' package included with your distro, on your installation disk(s). Install it from the Software Management part of the Mandriva Control Centre. It may have a slightly different name, like 'bin-utils'.

The output from the './configure' command that you entered shows that you do not have 'gcc' installed yet, either. Again, use Software Management to install this.

Trying to install any of these packages from .tar archives can cause all sorts of problems, as the default installation locations may be different from the locations set by your distribution.
