Default 96.29 Shows Black Screen if Composite and GLX are enabled together

Hi,

I'm using Linux nvidia drivers 96.29, under Debian unstable, with a GeForce 440 MX: when I enable both the GLX module and composite in xorg.conf, X shows up with a black screen. The mouse cursor shows up and is, uhm, working well; and I can exit X or escape to a terminal no problem. Screen resolution and color depth are correctly displayed from what I can see.

When composite is disabled AND when GLX is not loaded, GNOME works just fine, the problems presents itself when both options are enabled simultaneously. I've tried toggling various options (AddARGBGLXVisuals, DisableGLXRootClipping, and others), but no amount of toggling seems to help...

Obviously, disallowing GLXWithComposite lets X to work perfectly, altough I need both GLX and Composite to run compiz (that's what I'm trying to do now.) And, no, I'm not interested in using AIGLX or Xgl, anyway.

gdm seems to work well, the bug shows after I log in GNOME.

Xorg.0.log doesn't show any obvious error or warning to me.

The problem persists in 96.25. I didn't try 96.26, though.

Thanks,

Stefano

Using the new 96.31 drivers or a custom 2.6.19 kernel doesn't make a difference. Apart from the described problems, the drivers still work well.

Any suggestion?

I'm not sure that I understand the problem you're reporting. Are you stating that whenever you try to use Composite, and start X, nothing is ever displayed?

If so, I'd like to see a bug report generated from the good, working case without Composite, against 1.0-9631.

Thanks,
Lonni

Hi,

the problem is that whenever (Composite enabled && Damage enabled && GLX module loaded && AllowGLXWithComposite is true), X shows a black screen. (I hope that was detailed enough.) gdm works correctly, but when GNOME is launched after I log in, a black screen is shown. The (hw) mouse cursor shows up, and I can shut down X, but otherwise nothing else in X happens.

I re-run nvidia-bug-report on two sessions, one working and one not working. I did that to prevent changes from my previous post (changed drivers, kernel) to influence the bug report. (Reports attached.)

I'd be glad to offer any information that might help you.

Thanks,

Stefano

Forgot to mention that I'm using Con Kolivas' kernel patches.

If gdm runs fine, then this sounds like a window manager issue. Does this problem reproduce for multiple users on the system?

Thanks,
Lonni

Both metacity and compiz seem to work just fine (with Composite and GLX enabled together) when I log in as a fresh new user... I wonder which metacity setting is causing all that trouble with the other users.

Thanks,

Stefano
