PS3 nvidia drivers ?

I was wondering if there any plans for 3D accel. drivers for linux on PS3 hardware.

Point taken, didn't know it was based on G70. They usually do their own thing. Either way it would require them to first make the drivers compile on cell architecture, all just to satisfy a handfull of users.

If you want drivers for the PS3 I think you should pressure Sony instead, since they are probably the ones who can allow such a thing anyway.

They get about 120$ for the chip in the PS3 and provide quite good performance - they earn less money if you buy a PS3 instead of a 7900GTX

Well it will be a very popular machine for sure and it supports linux out of the box, legally without the need of hacks, special kits or whatever.

IMHO this console will be a very popular linux box.
Think PVR, a silent computer or indie game development.
At least more popular than any other linux/PPC, solaris or freebsd that need 3D accel.

You are probably right on this one, in any case I was just wondering not putting any pressure.

I guess, compiling basically wouldn't be a too big issue: PCIe device drivers
are typically pretty easily portable, assuming that the driver has already been
ported from an x86 to a big-endian platform. The Cell/BE has a PPC ISA,
and then nvidia OpenGL drivers have already been ported to PPC Mac.

I might be wrong, but i could imagine that the demand will raise:
600 Euro for game console is pretty expensive and Sony justified
the price tag with the argument that the PS3 will be a "real" computer
that can be used for email, web-browsing, office, etc.
Linux didn't made it to the pre-installation (as originally announced
by some Sony Manager), but if now also graphics hardware
acceleration is missing, then what is left over from the promise?

I might again be wrong, but my guess is that nvidia has more to say
on that topic than Sony has :-)

Considering that nvidia just designed and licensed it to sony and sony does the manufacturing and support, I doubt we'll ever see direct support from nvidia itself.
