Dear Forum,
I am trying to move from Windows environment to Linux so please bare with me and I will appreciate all the help I can get. I have a new installation of SuSE 8.1. The video card that I am using is Nvidia Vanta. The driver that was installed during initially was old and did not work properly so I downloaded the latest version and tried to install it. The install seems to work fine but I cannot change the screen resolution, the color depth or the monitor make and model. (meaning the driver is not working) After reading some of the posts here on the forum I tried to build my own install from tar file but results were the same. Oh and I did install them in safe mode that is without X. Also my 3D is disabled. I am interested in getting the video card to work first. Following are my findings: Please note that I am a newbie and I am just shooting in dark. 1-- I checked the MD5 checksum and they were correct. 2— I ran this nv_check.sh script. All of the tests seemed to pass except for the following error: “The NVdriver kernel module does not seem to be loaded. The 3D driver will not work without it. Please compile it for your kernel, set it up to insert the module on boot, then run this script again” 3—insmod nvidia gave me the following: using /lib/modules/2.4.19-4GB/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.o warning: loading /lib/modules/2.4. 19-4GB/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.o with taint the kernel: non-GPL license – NVIDIA Module nvidia loaded, with warnings 4—rpm –qa | grep NV gave me the following: NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-4191 NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-4191 5—modprobe NVdirver gave me the following: modprobe: Can’t locate module NVdriver 6—startx works but cannot change resolution or the color etc. 7—For people familiar with SuSE, when I check the install and remove program I find both packages in red. But they have check mark. Secondly the thing which does not seem right is that GLX package says 2.9 GB but the kernel package shows 0 size. I am sure there is some thing wrong here. 8—Yes of course SuSE Support was not of any help. They just replied that the we are not supporting third party installs. When I checked the rpm from nvidia site, that package had shannon.suse.de as contact person. Go Figure!!! 9—I found XF86 file in multiple places. I took this file from /etc/x11/XF86config is attached below just in case: # Version: 4.7 # Contact: Marcus Schaefer <sax@suse.de>, 2001 # # Automatically generated by [ISaX] (4.7) # PLEASE DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE! # Section "Files" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/local" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/URW" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/PEX" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin2/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/latin7/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/baekmuk:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/japanese:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/kwintv" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/uni" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/CID" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/misc" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/ucs/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/misc:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/75dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/100dpi:unscaled" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/hellas/Type1" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc/sgi" FontPath "/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/xtest" InputDevices "/dev/ttyS0" InputDevices "/dev/ttyS1" InputDevices "/dev/ttyS2" InputDevices "/dev/ttyS3" InputDevices "/dev/ttyS4" InputDevices "/dev/ttyS5" InputDevices "/dev/ttyS6" InputDevices "/dev/ttyS7" InputDevices "/dev/ttyS8" InputDevices "/dev/psaux" InputDevices "/dev/logibm" InputDevices "/dev/sunmouse" InputDevices "/dev/atibm" InputDevices "/dev/amigamouse" InputDevices "/dev/atarimouse" InputDevices "/dev/inportbm" InputDevices "/dev/gpmdata" InputDevices "/dev/mouse" InputDevices "/dev/usbmouse" InputDevices "/dev/adbmouse" InputDevices "/dev/input/mice" InputDevices "/dev/input/event0" InputDevices "/dev/pointer0" InputDevices "/dev/pointer1" InputDevices "/dev/pointer2" InputDevices "/dev/pointer3" EndSection Section "ServerFlags" Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" EndSection Section "Module" Load "extmod" Load "v4l" Load "dbe" Load "glx" Load "type1" Load "freetype" Load "speedo" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "Keyboard" Identifier "Keyboard[0]" Option "MapName" "Generic keyboard [ pc101 ]" Option "Protocol" "Standard" Option "XkbLayout" "us" Option "XkbModel" "pc101" Option "XkbRules" "xfree86" EndSection Section "InputDevice" Driver "mouse" Identifier "Mouse[1]" Option "ButtonNumber" "3" Option "Device" "/dev/psaux" Option "Name" "Autodetection" Option "Protocol" "imps/2" Option "Vendor" "Sysp" Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5" EndSection Section "Monitor" DisplaySize 320 240 HorizSync 31-80 Identifier "Monitor[0]" ModelName "1280X1024@75HZ" Option "DPMS" VendorName "--> VESA" VertRefresh 50-75 UseModes "Modes[0]" EndSection Section "Modes" Identifier "Modes[0]" Modeline "1280x1024" 127.80 1280 1296 1552 1736 1024 1024 1035 1070 Modeline "1280x1024" 135.00 1280 1296 1440 1688 1024 1025 1028 1066 +HSync +VSync Modeline "1152x864" 96.94 1152 1168 1384 1568 864 864 874 902 Modeline "800x600" 46.80 800 816 928 1072 600 600 606 626 Modeline "640x480" 29.95 640 656 720 864 480 480 485 501 Modeline "800x600" 46.80 800 816 928 1072 600 600 606 626 Modeline "640x480" 29.95 640 656 720 864 480 480 485 501 EndSection Section "Screen" DefaultDepth 8 SubSection "Display" Depth 15 Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 16 Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 24 Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 32 Modes "1280x1024" "1152x864" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection SubSection "Display" Depth 8 Modes "800x600" "640x480" EndSubSection Device "Device[0]" Identifier "Screen[0]" Monitor "Monitor[0]" EndSection Section "Device" BoardName "Vanta" BusID "1:0:0" Driver "nvidia" Identifier "Device[0]" Screen 0 VendorName "NVidia" EndSection Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Layout[all]" InputDevice "Keyboard[0]" "CoreKeyboard" InputDevice "Mouse[1]" "CorePointer" Option "Clone" "off" Option "Xinerama" "off" Screen "Screen[0]" EndSection Section "DRI" Group "video" Mode 0660 EndSection Kindest Regards, Art |
