Default 8800 GTX compatibility/driver problem

Hello!
Hey I just got this rig going on Weds with the (believe it or not) intent of running sof2 a little snappier and to run Vista.

I never could find an 8800 driver that would even run on Vista!! Even though that's plastered all over NV's site in reference to the 8800. Groan.

Furthermore I cannot run sof2 at all nor Prey nor ReturnToCastleWolfenstein nor can I even install QuakeII. Most of the problems are with OpenGL. Most of these failures end in the OpenGL window stating problems with finding bits and pieces of GL. With GLview I can find each of the "failed" files.

Maybe the problem is with xp64 but before I tear this really blistering fast wonderful cpu balancing system down and go back to 'multicore ignorant' xp I want to know if anyone else can successfully run any of these programs on an 8800 with even xp.

Anyone?

Is it just me or does it strike me odd that a card made specifically for Vista does not run on Vista yet...

Yes but i think the only reason is because Vista hasn't gone to retail yet as in the public can't purchase it yet.

8800 cards will not run OpenGL programs under XP64. There is only one dirver for XP64 96.89. XP32 will run some OpenGL games, However!! Example: Medal of Honor Allied Assault will run but neither of the two expansion packs will. Spearhead and Breakthrough.

There are all kinds of other problems with the 8800xx, the most noticible is the distant gray out which does occurr in more games than HL2. This includes OpenGL games in XP32.

Nvidia is finger pointing at the game coders, "Source Engine" problem not ours. Write a patch. This is ugly and not going to get better soon. This is also BS to put the 8800 on the market with no driver support or drivers that don't work. Yes I am pissed, I have 700 bucks of worthless of vidieo card sitting here that looks like crap. My 7800 GTX has total compatibility with all games, OS's, and renders games 1000% better.

One other thing when you buy these cards from companies like the Egg or Zip Zoom, keep in mind what their return policies are. There are none. You buy it it is yours for ever.

Thank you Nvidia.

I'd happily trade my 2 x 7800GTX's for an 8800

Also, I am very sorry to hear about the change in return policy for the Egg. It looks like the 8800 series is the only group of cards affected by this new return policy. I can totally understand that you're upset that you can't return it for a refund, but that's the price you pay for being on the "bleeding edge" - sometimes you get cut by it

I bought my BFG from the Fly. They have been pretty good about it, I thought my first card was defective and they did send me a new one, which of course did the same thing. I had lots of docs, and screen shots to send along. They did offer to refund or exchange the GTX, for 25%.

I am sure that all the 8800 problems will get worked out in time, just frustrating, I am sure to all involved.

Re XP64; been very very good to me. Faster and more secure than 32bit and about 200 points faster in 3D Mark 06. HL2 64bit mode. has some nice features. Unfortunate that there are only the 96.89's for the 8800. Because of that I am back to XP32 for the moment. (OpenGL issue)

darkrider01, becareful what you wish for, it may come true. Then you can bleed like me.

MSI NF4, 4800X2, 2 Gig, XFi, not OC'd will runs right at 9k on Mark 06, 97.28, 32bitXP. Add 200+ for XP64.

Obviously not faster in games if the drivers suck!

You still play HL2? And what may I ask is so good about the 64bit version?

Anyway sorry for being a ass, but XP64 is WORTHLESS for games.

I don't want you to be the guy in the PG-13 movie everyone's *really* hoping makes it happen. I want you to be like the guy in the rated R movie, you know, the guy you're not sure whether or not you like yet. You're not sure where he's coming from. Okay? You're a bad man. You're a bad man, Whiz187. You're a bad man, bad man. Use 32bit and stop whining.

J-Mag

All I'm saying is Xp64 works as good as Xp32 for me. All my hardware is supported with native drivers. The 64bit Nvidia video drvers for the 6 & 7 series cards are very good. Why do you say it is crappy for games? Very smooth for me. We have 64bit processors so why not use a 64 bit OS?

Ok, so far I don't like Vista 64 but then we don't have drivers for the 8800 & Vista yet so I will take a wait and see. Like I mentioned before, I am back to 32bit because the 64bit 8800 drivers SUCK!! (More than the 32 bit versions do!)

Now I have to reload FarCry and give it a go.
