Default Re: switch from X to any tty freezes the macine

here is small & short video to show the corruption of tty
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90Z9ImKRuok
as you can see, the corruption depends heavily on what was displayed on the screen before switching to tty1.
I think we could get closer to the cause if someone knew then do lcds display such weird pictures?

here is something more interesting:
when I decided to switch back to "nv" driver for a moment, editing xorg.conf; logging out and selecting "restart X" in kdm log in screen, then X will shut down, but not start again and the familiar stripes are all over the screen.
so yeah, one downside of the stripes in tty's is that you can't switch between nv and nvidia driver easily, only reboot is sane option

If I understand correctly, this is a regression: we have that 9631 is the last driver known to work , and 9746 is the first known to not-work. I was wondering if we could "bisect" the builds to get to the specific change that made this happen.

I will be happy to test any intermediate build to get to this bug.

i have a geforce go 6100 on my laptop, and obviously i have the same problem too! i think that the problems are in the monitor's frecuency, if i change the frecuency (CTRL plus ALT plus '+' or '-') i can see the tty! so it's obviously a frecuency problem!

what do you mean with "changing frequency"? monitor refresh rate?

anyone with kernel compilation experience, could you test the following:
Device Drivers --->
Graphics support --->
< > nVidia Riva support (do not enable!)
Logo configuration --->
[ ] Bootup logo (do not enable!)
?

yes, I have this problem and I am using those options. No fb whatsoever and no boot logo.

EDIT: Unfortunately 100.14.09 does not solve this issue.

I have the same on an Asus F3SV laptop (GeForce 8600M GS) with Gentoo 2007.0 (gentoo-sources 2.6.22-r1 with suspend2 and reiser4) and nvidia-drivers-100.14.09. I'm using gensplash and vesafb-tng.

I thought I had it solved for a moment when I booted with splash-related stuff (splash... video... quiet) removed from my grub kernel line and "pci=nommconf idle=poll" appended, but I can't reproduce as of yet. I'll keep trying. This sucks. There is no difference between nvidia and ati btw, both are doing an equally bad job.
