Default Fullscreen 3d game => crashing X server

Hello all ,

I'm using gentoo linux since a few weeks , but what i missed from my windows where the games. So i tought , i install some games and i can game on .

So I installed ut2004 with emerge , but it keeps crashing on startup. I first tought it was specific to ut2004 so I installed some other (free) games , but when i start them , they also do X crash. Even when i start a 'home compiled' project with allegro , my X server crashes.

Here is a link to my xorg.log file when it crashed : xorg.0.log.old.

And a link to my xorg.conf : xorg.conf

Greetings , evert .

If your nvidia driver is 1.0.9629, it is a new problem with that driver.

The response I got from tech support is:
This is a known bug which is triggered when making a specific type of mode change while using a DFP, and will be resolved in the next driver release. The current workarounds are to either change to the mode you need with xrandr or downgrade to an older driver version.

I noticed that if I manually switch ut2004 to play in windowed mode (through it's config file) I could play the games... it's the fullscreen switch for me that kills X. I didn't check out the xrandr workaround though.

Is that UT2K4 stock install OR with all the updates?? (3369 being the lastest update) It runs fine for me with any of the drivers. Using either RHEL4 U4 (2.6.9.x kernel) and with FC5 (2.6.18.x kernel).. The only small annoying problem I get, is the ocasional stutter (With FC5). But other than that it runs fine for me..

Thanks for the tip. I upgraded my driver to :
Quote:
* x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers
Latest version available: 1.0.9742
Latest version installed: 1.0.9742
Now the game starts , but I'm still having very poor framerates , like 20 fps.
I'm having under windows with the same 6800gt (same system ) constant the 80 fps max frame limit.

Any solution for this (extremely) bad performance ?

Thanks , Evert

Maybe the driver is not installed properly and hardware glx is not enabled ?

Code:
glxinfo | grep direct

On my box 6800GS + 9742 + ut2004 (64bit, 1280x1024 settings very high ) I get in a big ons map like torlan with 1 skilled bot about avg 75. min 69 max 125.

Maybe ut2004 or better the sdl library use the mesa libGL.so.1 instead of the nvidia one ?

Using the Mesa library will make it slower, as it's Software GL. You'd be better to install the latest SDL version and set a link in the UT2004/System directory to that..

Since you installed the nvidia drivers and ut2004 with 'emerge' I think is best to ask also in a gentoo forum.
