X freezes on startup when using 8xxx or 9xxx drivers

I've a Geforce3 TI 200 on an Intel motherboard which has the i845G graphic chipset. I'm using Ubuntu Edgy Eft (6.10).
When I use the legacy drivers, that is to say the 7184, I don't have any problem, but when I use the newer such as the 8774, 8776 or 9626, X freezes on starting. In fact, Xlog shows that X stops just after having enabling GLX acceleration, as it is visible in the nvidia-bug-report.log I've attached.
Moreover, I'm not able to switch to a console with Ctrl+alt+F1, for example, nor to stop X with Ctrl+Alt+BkSpce. But I can still reboot using Ctrl+alt+del or the magic syst keys.

Any idea ?

You might want to try reinstalling the Nvidia drivers using the info from http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=79966

Change your /etc/X11/xorg.conf to use the 'nv' driver first.

The reinstallation of the nvidia drivers hasn't changed the problem.

I have a few questions:
0) Does this problem persist if you set RenderAccel to false, and do not use the Composite extension in xorg.conf ?
1) Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard?
2) Does setting NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf have any impact?
3) Does booting with the noapic and/or acpi=off kernel parameters have any impact?
