Default Svideo TV-Out to 16:9 HDTV - need xorg help

Okay, here is how I want this to work. No twinview, JUST using the TV as a monitor. I have xorg working, and as per the Nvidia manual, I set the HorizSync to 30-50 and VertRefresh to 60. Needless to say, THAT DOESN'T WORK. The screen is only taking up about half the area and is scrolling around. What I mean to say is that it's acting as a virtual desktop and the screen is scrolling when the pointer comes to the edge. Could someone who has a working setup tell me the CORRECT parameters? Also, this is running through NTSC since I live in the US and am using a Toshiba TV, correct? I'm not familiar with the PAL standards. I just want this thing to work.

seems to run fine at 800x600 aside from the desktop scrolling. I tried to add 1024x768 mode in xorg.conf, but that didn't work. I guess what I need is a modeline to use.

You need the various TV out options to make it work. As I have no idea what res you want you'll need to either read the Appendix H. Configuring TV-Out or supply a bit more info.

The sync rates of 30-50 / 60 are meant for standard televisions and not for HDTVs if you want high resolutions. Second you don't want to connect to a TV using s-video or composite. The wiring can't handle high resolutions properly and I don't think Nvidia's tvout encoder can output high resolutions using s-video. You want to use HDMI/DVI if that's available or else at least component.

This works for me on my Sony CRT in the screen section:

<----------Snip----------------->

Option "UseEDID" "FALSE"
Option "TVStandard" "HD1080i"
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "TV"
Option "TvOutFormat" "Component"
Option "metamodes" "CRT: 1920x1080 +0+0"
SubSection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1920x1080i60"
EndSubSection

<----------Snip------------------>

I can only get 1080i with component out. DVI so far is confined to 720p.

Thanks a ton! I know the one I have is 16:9, don't think it's 1080i. So, a DVI->HDMI adapter? It's working just fine now. I set it up and it works on 800x600. It just wouldn't be great for movies, because it won't go widescreen. If I use the DVI->HDMI I wouldn't need to have to mess with the TV out settings, it would just be like configuring another monitor, correct?

It is correct that in case of DVI/HDMI you don't have to mess with TV settings, it is just a monitor. In case of 'normal tvout' the image generated by the GPU is converted (using an onGPU tvout encoder) to a TV image. During this conversion a lot of image quality is lost and second it can't output high resolutions (partly because TVs don't support that).

Yeah, the image quality really sucks. So, how do I know what sync ranges to use with the HDMI cable? I know they cost like $30, but I'm so picking one up today! I want to be able to use this thing both as a server and a media PC.

RTFM. Of the TV, that is.
There usually is some table that explains what picture formats it supports.

The output of my TV-Out at 720p using component seems as good as the same through DVI. As I said I don't seem to be able to get 1080i through DVI.

Okay, here is the only thing in the manual related to HDMI and video

HDMI INPUT
HDMI compliant (type A connector)
HDCP compliant
E-EDID* compliant
Suggested scan rates: 1080i, 480p, 480i, 720p
HDMI Audio 2-channel PCM; 32/44.1/48 kHz
sampling frequency; 16/20/24 bits per sample

I'm going to continue to look for a guide on how to set this up.
