Default black screen...

Clevo D900K notebook, geforce go 7900 gtx 256mb.
debian 4.0, kernel 2.6.16-2-amd64-generic
9629 nvidia drivers

So I have tried everything I have found and nothing seems to do it, my xorg.conf file is loaded with device options by now, I am somewhat new to linux. I have attached the nvidia-bug-report.sh log file, can someone who knows what they're doing have a look at it and maybe see what's wrong? thanks

X works with the "nv" driver, but only in 1024x768 (ugh)

I decided to go ahead and log in remotely with ssh to my machine while it was displaying the black screen, and ran nvidia-bug-report.sh. It was going for about 5 minutes before i decided to log in again from a different client, and check the log file it had created to see what was going on. it had only done this much of it:

nvidia-bug-report.sh Version: 1634088

so i killed the bug-report script, logged out of both, logged back in on one and ran it again, same thing.

@pauledwards03: what does the output of `dmesg` look like when you execute the command from a remote shell after X hangs?

@pauledwards03: does this also happen with the 1.0-9742 BETA driver?

just tried, it didnt hang this time, the x server just failed and returned me to command prompt. so i removed my xorg.conf file and replaced it with the one that works and allows me to use X with the nv driver, and it also caused the server to crash. i installed the 9629 driver, and it is back to normal, black screen hangs, but i am able to use X again with the nv bundled driver.

edit...

I reinstalled the 9724 driver and the system hung at the black screen, rebooted and gdm tried to start up, then the server crashed leaving me back at the command prompt. xorg log says nvidia.ko is an invalid module format and wouldnt insert it. here i am back with the "nv" driver...

hosed debian, installed FC6...

glxgears works:
7080 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1413.645 FPS

but still the black screen when i try to use the nvidia driver, and other graphics intensive stuff runs at incredibly low framerate

@pauledwards03: judging from the update you made to your #6 post, you were able to reproduce the X hang once with the 1.0-9742 BETA driver; could you try to reproduce it again and provide the output of `dmesg` after the hang?

i cannot find the kernel source for my kernel, so i cannot install the beta drivers, the 9629 driver is installed, and it produces that good old black screen again. however, i am able to log in remotely and run the bug report script and it finishes now, the log is attached along with the dmesg output

According to the bug report, the driver is falling back to a 640x480 mode because you didn't request any modes.

Can you try adding the following to the Screen section of xorg.conf:
Modes "nvidia-auto-select"

and if that doesn't help, please start X with the following command:
startx -- -logverbose 6

and then generate a new bug report.

Thanks,
Lonni
