Default 8800gtx & quake4

Got my 8800gtx and it's faster than a speeding bullet but it's also much faster under windows.

under windows I get a solid 60 fps but the same setup under linux is only hitting 60 on specific pats of a map. And is dropping down to 37 and 25 fps quite often.

This would not be a big problem if this was hard to actually notice but its not it is very easy to spot the difference even without showing the fps counter.

What is the reason for this ?? could it have anything to do with the game itself and not be a river problem? I noticed that I could not turn on the multicore support under linux for some reason.

You need Q4 update quake4-linux-1.3-2.x86.run to do SMP. Works well. I'm pretty close to 60 fps with a GT6600 but just at HQ with not much else, still it's at 1920x1080 so I'm pleased.

@ kenjo: There seems to be something wrong with your setup.. What distro of Linux are you running?? And what Nvidia driver are you running?? .. I get a solid 60fps (Because it's capped at 60fps, and with non-smp mode), with my Nvidia (MSI)7900GTO.. (In Linux that is)..

Running FC5 Linux (With all updates), using the Nvidia 87.76 drivers.

Uhhh a GT6600 is no monster card my friend. 1920x1080 is a lot of pixels. I'm not sure what you mean.

Well Im on ubuntu feistyfawn(7.04) and on linux the driver are 9742 the only one supporting 8800gtx. running on a core 2 duo E6600 CPU with 2G RAM.

The game is very smooth under windows very visible on the cinematic scenes when on linux the graphics looks like its jumping 3-4 time a second on windows it's really smoth with just a handfull of jump over the entire sequence.

You need to run the 'quake4-smp' script to have that working..

Just ran another test myself, using the quake4 smp setup.. I get 98% constant 63fps all the way through the first tier. The Cinematic Scenes, were VERY smooth, slight drops now and then. But nothing to affect the video (no pausing etc)... Not really quite sure what can be causing your problems.. I don't run an Intel CPU, mines an AMD Athlon 64 FX62 Dual Core (Socket AM2) .. From the reviews I've read on the 8800 series cards, your card should blow my (7900GTO, and my 7950GX2 (When I ever get it back)) out of the water.. So the problem could either be the Linux kernel, or the video driver.. The installation of FC5 I'm running uses the 2.6.18-1.2239.fc5smp kernel. BUT, I'm only running the older 87.76 Nvidia driver at the moment.. (The 9x.xx drivers the fps's drop by 5-10% over the 87.76 drivers.. Plus some other small issues here and there...)

It may just be your xorg.conf configuration.. Just make sure ALL references to DRI are removed.. (Even the 'Load DRI' stuff) (I guess that you would already know that though...)

A post of your xorg.conf file might help sort this out..

Well it's probably just imature drivers they are after all still beta.

Could be something with the vblank since I get the 25 and 38 (75/3) (75/2).

Yes, that could very well be it... Although those cards should still be backward compatible to the older models.. It would just mean that you won't be able to use the cards advanced features, until the stable driver becomes available..

I don't know what you mean by that exactly?? I disable all vbanking, as it's only really required if you see screen tearing, which I have never seen on any of the monitors that I have used..
