According to your bug report, you're using the 1.0-9746 nvidia kernel module with the 1.0-9631 X driver. That will not work. Either contact Livna for assistance, or install the official NVIDIA driver package.

Thanks,
Lonni

Default Re: FC6 1.0-9629 & 1.0-9631 troubles

I'm sorry for my bad english.
I'll try to explain all what I'd try to say earlier in a few words.

I have Fedora Core 6, i686, GeForce 6600 GT.

I'd try kernels 2.6.18-1.2849.fc6 and 2.6.18-1.2868.fc6.
Driver version is 1.0-9631.

I CAN'T run 96xx driver if I compile it from sources for both of kernels.
I CAN run 96xx driver if I download rpms from Livna repository for both of kernels.

There is one little difference with rpms from Livna:
Under 2.6.18-1.2849 kernel all works perfect.
Under 2.6.18-1.2868 kernel glxgears and glxinfo says, that they can't open device /dev/nvidiactl, but all works fine.

That's all.

Following message is shown when I try to run compiled driver under 2.6.18-1.2868.fc6 kernel.

@vvb: is this problem specific to the Livna RPM packages?

Problem specific to ALL versions, BUT the Livna rpms:

1. Source driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9631-pkg1.run). Compiled OK, Don't work.
2. RPM from zod.freshrpms.net (nvidia-x11-drv-1.0.9746-1.i386.rpm). Don't work.
3. RPMs from Livna (xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-1.0.9631-1.lvn6 & kmod-nvidia-1.0.9631-1.2.6.18_1.2868.fc6). WORKS FINE.

I admit that it's still not entirely clear to me which problem(s) the log file excerpt and the nvidia-bug-report.log file correspond to. If the /dev/nvidiactl device file can't be opened, as reported in the excerpt, the NVIDIA graphics driver components won't work (the X driver aborts its initialization as described above); it's not clear to me how /dev/nvidiactl didn't exist at X startup time, however, since the X driver creates this file - is this what you're seeing with the Liva package(s)? Does the nvidia-bug-report.log file capture the problem with 1.0-9631 installed using the .run package?

In addition to Zander's questions, I'd like to see a bug report against the official 1.0-9746 driver package (not Livna's) if it also fails to work.

Thanks,
Lonni

1. Source driver (NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9631-pkg1.run). Compiled OK.
When I start X I get:
--
NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidiactl (No such file or directory).
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA kernel module! Please ensure
(EE) NVIDIA(0): that there is a supported NVIDIA GPU in this system, and

Fatal server error:
no screens found
XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0"
after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
--

So, nothing works.
[see last nvidia-bug-report.log, 94.9 KB for details]

2. RPM from zod.freshrpms.net (nvidia-x11-drv-1.0.9746-1.i386.rpm). Don't work.
3. RPMs from Livna
3a. With (xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-1.0.9629-1.lvn6 & kmod-nvidia-1.0.9629-1.2.6.18_1.2798.fc6)
All works perfect. No error messages, no problems.
3b. With (xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-1.0.9631-1.lvn6 & kmod-nvidia-1.0.9631-1.2.6.18_1.2868.fc6).
All works fine, but have strange messages:
--
[vvb@vampire ~]$ glxgears
NVIDIA: could not open the device file /dev/nvidiactl (Permission denied).
NVIDIA: Direct rendering failed; attempting indirect rendering.
28419 frames in 5.0 seconds = 5667.103 FPS
24895 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4966.714 FPS
--
File /dev/nvidiactl exists.
I'll try to attach screenshot.

Default Re: FC6 1.0-9629 & 1.0-9631 troubles

I've try to install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run
As always, compile OK, and X don't start.
Error log is attached.

After this I've install Livna rpms (as they are only works for my system).
(xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-1.0.9631-1.lvn6 & kmod-nvidia-1.0.9631-1.2.6.18_1.2868.fc6).
Reboot. startx.
Now strange one.
after glxgears everything is ok. No error messages at all:
--
[vvb@vampire nVidia_1.0_9746]$ glxgears
33796 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6759.103 FPS
33937 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6787.392 FPS
34208 frames in 5.0 seconds = 6841.473 FPS
--
As you can see on my screenshot in previous post, there WERE error messages!
Now it seems that all Livna RPMs are working good. I can't explain it.
