Default What is the cheapest NVidia chipset that works with Linux+Apple Cinema (2560x1600) ?

While the driver for the GTX 8800 for Linux is not ready I want to buy any board that would support this monitor at it's natural resolution (2560x1600)

Any recommendations ?

thx!

The main issue to watch for is the availability of a Dual-link DVI output.
This does not seem to be really related to the chipset. Even 5200 cards with Dual-link DVI do exist.

Would you know for sure that there won't be the same bug as the one for GTX 8800, which don't recognize this screen (?? or some other problem) ?

G80 is the only GPU in 1.0-9742 known to have an issue with dual link TMDS.

Most geforce7 cards contain a dual link TMDS. So look for such a card and check if it has this capability.

I'm not sure if you could actually buy one of these separately, but Apple is using a passive 7300GT in the Mac Pro. It has one dual-link port, and a single-link.

I bought a modern eVGA 6600GT on newegg recently that has at least one dual-link DVI.

It was clearly marked as "supporting Apple 30" display". I can look up the model number if really necessary.

I've just put an order in for a Nvidia Quadro FX560 and an HP LP3065 (30"). The FX560 seems to be the cheapest I could find.

Nice, I got a 7300Gt for $90 - $20 (rebate), and it works very well in Linux ... should serve me well untill 8800 GTX is supported

Who says that the 8800GTX doesn't work? It works fine using the 1.0-9742 beta drivers or do you have something against beta drivers?

It works, just not with dual-link DVI (DUAL TMDS) so it means crappy 1280x800 resolution for those of us who can force it until NVIDIA fixes this. I just freaking ordered a 8800 GTX too, pisses me off that its gonna be useless in linux for a while until they fix the driver!

Also I can verify the EVGA 6600GT (just bought one for my machine at work) is 2xdual-link DVI according to the Xorg log files:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814130064 (more than fast enough for compiz @2560x1600). Beryl seemed to run like crap on my home machine, so I stuck with compiz on my machine at work. So I can't comment on how Beryl will run.
