Basically no... The hardware could easily decode the movie playback but it still would need drivers and the application to be coded for the hardware. The X360 is stressed to its limits to playback HD-DVD, The PS3 would need to be optimized for the playback aswell by using the PPU and SPUs.

So I dout an opensource developer could do it but any actual closed developer could make an application and sell it, I dout Sony would stop them.

Link source thanks.

Also link source that the Cell could "easily" decode HD DVD playback.

I actually just read about the 360's cores being maxed out somewhere...I think it was an MS employee. He also mentioned that the code in order to get the player to work was like 4.7 million lines of code.

I'm trying to find that link...

All 6 of Xbox 360's hardware threads are hard at work while playing back an HD DVD. At the moment, the player software pushes Xbox 360 harder than any other (save, perhaps, Gears of War during some particularly busy parts of the game).

The Xbox 360 HD DVD Player, for the most part, is an entirely software based implementation.
Considering that its software based and its a KNOWN fact that the CELL has more number crunching power then the Xbox 360's PPC (as long as the software is written for it). PS3 uses the CELL CPU to decode DVD and Blu-Ray playback....

So the cell can "easily" do it? If the X360 is maxed, and the cELL can do it easily, you are implying that the cELL is "far more" powerful, which is doubtful.

Yes, I am implying that the CELL is far more powerful when it comes to decoding media such as Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. Remeber, it was designed around such capabilties, Sony just took it alittle further and is trying to apply it to gaming.

teh cell is as overhyped as the emotion engine was. It's in a $300 box for ****s sake. ( half the PS3 is the BD drive ) It's nothing.

Considering a decent PC cpu can decode HD DVD I'm pretty sure the Cell is capable.

As I said in an earlier post, you sir are a ****ing douche bag.

I think what you mean to ask is, "when will average consumers realize they are at the top of their PS3's 'to kill' list?"
