Question GLX not working.. glxgears aborted

Hi all,

I recently upgraded to a GeForce FX 5500 AGP

when i run glxinfo it says i have direct rendering:

glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4

When i try to run glxgears or any other glx program it will crash or abort

$ glxgears
Aborted

I am currently running version 1.0.9742 of the drivers but i have also tried version
1.0.9631 and 1.0.8776.

I have linux kernel 2.6.19 and xorg 7.1 on gentoo linux. I also have a dual screen setup.

Any ideas what is wrong?

Thanks...

I don't see the nvidia-installer.log in your bug report. How did you install the driver? Does (re)installing it via the official driver package make a difference?

Other than glxgears what else isn't running?

Thanks,
Lonni

In installed the Gentoo packages.
http://packages.gentoo.org/packages/...nvidia-drivers

I also tried the legacy drivers with no success.
http://packages.gentoo.org/ebuilds/?...ivers-1.0.7184

Any program that tries to use GLX opengl crashes,
For example googlearth. opengl screen savers etc.

I have been using the gentoo packages with many versions for my old Nforce4 440 for years without a problem.. I just upgraded to the 5500 and had problems.
I will try the official package and report back.

I just tried the official 1.0-9631 for Linux x86 and see the same problem.

For example google earth crash.

$ googleearth
Google Earth has caught signal 6.

Stacktrace from glibc:
./googleearth-bin(__gxx_personality_v0+0x1b8) [0x804b154]
./googleearth-bin [0x804b53b]

In this bug report, I see:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Error recovery failed.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(WW) NVIDIA(0): The NVIDIA X driver has encountered too many errors. Falling
(WW) NVIDIA(0): back to legacy PCI mode.

I have a few questions:
0) Does this problem persist with 1.0-9742 as well?
1) If you set NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf, does that have any impact?
2) Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard?

Thanks,
Lonni

thanks netlama,

0) Does this problem persist with 1.0-9742 as well?
Yes. Earlier I had tried 1.0.9742, 1.0.9631 and 1.0.8776.

1) If you set NvAGP to 0 in xorg.conf, does that have any impact?

Hey, that works!! I can now run GL programs. glxgears, googleearth, opengl screensavers now work..

2) Have you verified that you're using the latest BIOS for the motherboard?

Yes.

Option "NvAGP" "0" resolved the issue. I was starting to suspect that the card could be damaged, but now I'm not sure again.

Any suggestions on making AGP work?

Thanks again.

You can experiment with different values for NvAGP, however ultimately this is an AGP driver bug or your motherboard has issues running at faster AGP rates.

Thanks,

Heya karlos, I have the exact same problem
(see http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=82251) : Stable system (with AGP4x), then I install a new video card (same drivers, same AGP rate): very unstable system. I can't believe this can be an agp driver bug, as it works fine with another card on the same bus - and agp is agp from the point of view of the agp driver (besides - the level of instability is EXTREME in my case; it even extends to beyond using AGP at all (setting NvAGP to 0 disables AGP as you might know)).

I now suspect the new card reveals something that I might be able to fix by replacing the capacitors on my motherboard. See http://www.badcaps.net/ident/

Just wondering if perhaps you have bad caps too

Alaric
