Default 9631 tv-out screen flicker

I have recently upgraded from 8776 to 9631, and I now get interlace flicker and lowered image quality while playing videos (appears to be 1 pixel jumping the interlacing to take up 2 pixels).

I have tried tweaking my xorg.conf file with no success.

The relevant parts of my xorg.conf:
Code:
Section "Monitor"
    Identifier "TVOut"
    HorizSync 30.0 - 50.0
    VertRefresh 50
    #Modeline "720x576" 14.881 720 781 829 960 576 606 610 646 interlace +hsync +vsync
EndSection

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Generic Video Card"
    Driver "nvidia"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Default Screen"
    Device "Generic Video Card"
    Monitor "TVOut"
    DefaultDepth 16
    Option "TVStandard" "PAL-I"
    Option "TVOutFormat" "COMPOSITE"
    Option "NoLogo" "true"
    Option "DPMS" "false"
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 16
        #Modes "720x576"
    EndSubSection
EndSection
I have chosen PAL-I as I live in Australia. I also tried with the above ModeLine (and Mode) enabled with no success.

Kernel: 2.6.16.18
CPU: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2500+
Video Card: nVidia Corporation NV17 [GeForce4 MX 440] (rev a3)

Reverting back to 8776 works as expected.

Please generate and attach an nvidia-bug-report.log along with details on how to reproduce this problem.

Thanks,
Lonni

This is the file generated while the xorg server was running.

EDIT: it happens 100% of the time, to replicate it all i needed to do was install the driver itself, downgrading to 8776 fixes the problem.

You stated "I now get interlace flicker and lowered image quality while playing videos". You haven't provided the steps needed to reproduce that part of the problem. Specifically which 'videos' are needed to reproduce the problem, and what are you using to play them?

Thanks,
Lonni

The machine with that card solely runs MythTV (mythfrontend), I play videos with its internal player and mplayer. The image quality of the recorded videos are PAL (768x576, 16:9) or higher (HD 1280p, 1080i, 720p, 576p).

The MythTV version is 0.20-svn20061209-0.1 and mplayer version is 1.0-rc1-0.1 (debian packages) from http://www.debian-multimedia.org/ .

I use MythTV for a few hours each day, and the flicker is sufficient to cause hedaches. The flicker is still there during video playback.

EDIT: The flicker exists during playback, in the MythTV menus and also while running fluxbox with an rxvt.

Please provide or point me to content which reproduces the flickering.

Thanks,

Any static image.

My partially educated guess would be that the alternating lines aren't being sent to the TV properly, or are being ignored and the above or below line is being sent.

I can't easily test it out, but I am guessing that it is only on TV Out, and standard VGA does not do it.

I have a similar issue.

My card is a MX 440.

TV out must be enabled differently in the new drivers then it was in the old.

When I switched from 8762 to 9625 and every version from that point on, TV out is no longer displayed in full interlace.

Instead of getting both odd and even fields, just one of the fields is displayed for both fields and the result is a halving of the visible resolution.

Because of this I'm unable to run compiz or beryl on a TV due to needing the new drivers to do so but the new drivers half the apparent resolution.

Hi,

Exactly same thing here, also with a MX440. IMO, it's yet easier to spot the difference in small screen fonts (ie. k-menu, icons, etc.), which are now no longer readable in the TV. Anyway, it's also noticeable in video/pictures, which are now, umm... pixelized.

I tried to tweak the xorg.conf without success. I also tried with either Twinview or Xinerama to the TV, with exactly the same result. Also, downgrading to 8776 automagically solves everything with any xorg.conf, so, I guess the xserver config is out of the equation.

I'm using SVIDEO and PAL-B, but tried with other combinations (COMPOSITE+NTSC, etc...) , and I'm able to see them in the TV (luckily my TV supports all those standards) but the problem persist.

And as the last post, I'm in trouble, as I use the TV quite frequently as a clone screen to see videos there, but I also run beryl, which is the reason to need the 96xx driver.

Let me know if I can add any info that helps to solve this, as it's becoming a headache.

cheers,
k

I have been having the same problem too, I believe. I've previously posted my log and bug report at this thread:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=82531

Does this add any more info to the equation? Is there any other info I could post that could help track this down?

SAme thing here with GeForce4 MX 440. In MythTV it looks horrible making the fonts unreadable. Haven't even tried to see what video looks like as it's kinda of pointless with the menus looking so bad. Like the person above said, it looks like half the lines are missing. 8776 works fine after using the patch so it runs under 2.6.19 kernels.

Have there been any new developments on this? I seem to remember reading a posting that sounded similar that indicated this was being addressed in a future driver release. Am I correct?

Any comment from nVidia engineers?
