Default why lower the mulitplier?

Why would you want to lower the mulitplier on the CPU? I mean....if you can do x9 on the cpu and 350 on the FSB....whats would really be the benefit of doing x8 and say 400 on the FSB?

I mean....do you pretty much just try different mulitplers and FSB combonations just to see if the cpu will do better with an x8 than a x9?

uh..........explain to me here.

You lower the multiplier to see how high you can push the FSB. You want your OC to be the highest megahertz possible while keeping your FSB as high as possible. Add in some good RAM and run it locked with the FSB for even better peformance. For example, run 500fsb then your ram will be at 1ghz if it can go that high =)

uh..........explain to me here.

Like the previous poster explained, but especially to open up your options for memory. My memory wont do 275mhz, it wont no matter how hard i try. If I keep the multi at 10x and pump fsb to 275 my cpu is hitting 2.75ghz, but memory is hitting 275mhz [no divider] as well. My board is good to 355mhz, so i lowered the multi to 9x, raised the fsb to 305 and my cpu is still running 2.75ghz, but my ram is within spec at [250mhz running on a 5/6 divider]

It most importantly gives you better options for getting your memory near its rated speed or the speed you know its good to. My RAM is pc4000 and is rock solid at its stock 250mhz speed, but its not great overclocking ram, it can only do 255mhz max with ultra loose timings, therefore using a 9x multi on my cpu instead of 10x gets me the most out of my system. My cpu is a 3800+x2 stock is 10*200. Theres no benefit in lowering the multi and raising the FSB and using a divider to get your memory running at the same speed it was on the other multi at all, sometimes it helps with stability for unknown reasons [at least to me] but other than that, theres no real benefit.

One reason to lower your multipler is so that you can run your CPU and memory at a 1:1 ratio ,like if your computer will just do 3.2gigs then ypu could lower your multipler to 8 and run your memory at 800 (400DDR) which would be 3.2 gigs ,and you would have more memory bandwidth.

Yeah processors peform better linked FSB, once you hit the wall the the CPU clock you increase the FSB and memory so you get further performance increases. CPU clock isn't every thing. So lets say the top speed you can overclock is 3200MHz, 16x200 = 3200 (6.4GB/sec bandwith), but 7x457 = 3199MHz (14.6GB/sec), the later is by far faster due to the extra bandwith available These are 128bit DDR rates like in a Athlon 64.

While that for the most part is true, I can provide proof to where that is wrong to some extent.

Although at some point in the future that will be less true, right now and for years to come its for the most part true. CPU speed is King: not necessarily everything but its king. Anyhow if you really are interested in the topic make sure you review that thread for complete information. Although I used to think that too due to more bandwidth it would be faster but the bottom line is the cpu is utmost important factor here and the main reason for lowering the multi is for stabilizing your pc or running your memory within spec or etc. For more options pretty much.

I'm not saying you are dead wrong as clearly that will boost memory bandwidth but its just not that important right now or wont be for a while.

yea i always wondered the same thing. doesnt make sense to lower the multi right? ehh not quite....

you see the problem with mobos is they dont offer a very good range of memory dividers. while they have the standard ones, say you need one in between (one is too low and the next one is too high)

thats where you lower CPU multipliers. you go to the next FSB up, which puts your memory up to where you want it to be, then you lower your CPU multiplier to prevent your CPU from going past its limit. the benefits of lowering the CPU are merely for memory purposes, when you cant get a memory speed you want and the CPU speed goes too high.

All the reviews I have seen show having more memory bandwidth does little in game performance,some games show a little gain ,but nothing to lose sleep over.
