Because of the problems with Vista's "User Access Control"-feature (UAC) I decided to make a major change to nHancer.

You won't see much difference, but internally nHancer is now using a Windows service to make all changes which require Administrator privileges. The nHancer UI itself runs completely in a restricted user context. This way, nHancer avoids all problems with Vista's UAC and the autostart is also working again in Vista.

The service itself runs with administrator privileges. I have made sure that it doesn't add any security leak to your system by making sure that its functions are extremely limited and tailored to the needs of nHancer. It can only write the file windows\system32\nvapps.xml (the file where nVidia stores the profiles) for example.

The service is also completely passive, so even though it's running, it doesn't do anything as long as the nHancer UI isn't used.

Besides this big change, the new version contains a couple of bugfixes and some small improvements:
  • Compatibility with Forceware 100+ for XP added
  • Reintroduced the Supersampling modes (8xS, 16xS, 2x2 etc.) for 8x00 cards
  • Added all new Anti-Aliasing modes for 8x00 cards (32xS, SLI 64xS)
  • small bugfixes and improvements

A complete change log is in the Readme file

And you can download the new version from the download page, as usual...

I hope you like the new version! Comments are welcome as always.
Thanks grestorn. It's highly appreciated. In fact, they're the reason Vista is now officially better than xp.

Yes, of course. But you have to start it before using nHancer.

But there's really very little to gain from disabling the service. The service does absolutely nothing as long as the user doesn't actually change a setting in nHancer. In theory it takes about 1 MB of memory, but even that is swapped out if some other application really does need all the memory it can get.

Same is true for most services by the way. Other than to speed up starting a little, there's really not much to gain from disabling most services.

Unfortunately, version 2.2.0 contained a couple of bugs. Most of them only appeared on very few systems.

I've created an update which corrects all those bugs. It has the version number 2.2.1. You can download that update from the download page, as usual.

Thanks to all the people who reported those bugs and helped me narrowing down the problem!

Here's the list of changes:

Version 2.2.1
  • Bugfix: If the user selected another monitor as the primary display as detected by default, the nHancer support service denied access to the registry.
  • Bugfix: Due to a typo it could happen in some rare cases that the nHancer support service would deny to write the file nvapps.xml
  • Bugfix: On XP systems, the nHancer support service blocked system shutdown for about 20 seconds.
  • On some systems the nHancer support service wasn’t ready yet when the main program was trying to access it. Now nHancer will try to connect the service for 20 seconds before giving up.
  • Updated the polish translation, thanks to Tymoteusz Kuczyński

nHancer Rocks. It would be great if it could also "Auto - overclock" the video card too.. Exactly what the driver w/ coolbits is supposed to do, but that functionality has been messed up for a while now in the drivers.

Would it be extremely difficult to also manipulate those registry settings via nHancer?

I might add some Overclocking options, but it really depends on whether this is possible just by changing registry settings. If it's also required to interface with the driver to update the frequence on-the-fly, I'd have to figure out how to do that.

Not that easy, probably. But I still like to do it sometime, if I've got the time.

Oh yeah.. maybe it IS more complicated than just changing registry settings at a specific time (when a 3D app starts, etc..) I never thought of that.

Does Nhancer allow monitoring of GPU temps and adjustment of GPU fan speed on the 8800GTX?
