Default New gaming rig coming soon!

Alright ladies and gents!
I'm on a quest of building my next rig. I've already started getting some of the parts, and within the next few weeks, I will be getting more. I'm gonna keep this thread updated, so I'm gonna need feedback from you guys about your suggestions/opinions/links to deals/etc.

Here we go:
  • Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard *
  • Logitech G7 Gaming Mouse *
  • Corsair XMS2 PC2-6400 4-4-4-12 2GB *
  • AMD Athlon 64 X2 5000+ Dual-Core Processor
  • Asus M2N32-SLI Deluxe
  • CoolIT Freezone/Eliminator
  • 8800 GTX (Will get 2, but for right now, I'm going to get just one)
  • 24"+ LCD Monitor * (I got a 22" Westy for now)
  • 3 x Hard drives (Large storage capacity)
  • 2 x DVD-RW's
  • Antec or BFG PS
  • Soundcard
* Things already purchased

Am I missing anything? Most of this stuff I will have to wait on, but some of this stuff I will buy from week to week.

The Conroe is a pretty well-proven CPU, was wondering why you weren't interested in going with it? I only say this because it looks like you are switching out mobo's as well, and this is usually the best time to recommend a switch.

I just prefer AMD line of CPU's...not in a fanboy-ish kind of way, but I just like them better.

Well see here's the thing, I understand you like AMD, but if you wanna power the 8800GTX beast, the Core 2's seem to be the way to go. Focusing on what the system is going to do is important and for gaming; the Core 2 + 8800GTX combo is doing better than anything in the AMD line; including the QuadFX systems.

I'm not an Intel fan boy by any means, Intel has been out of the game for years, AMD capitalized on it and during that time I enjoyed the performance of my AMD parts. The Core 2 came out and changed that, now Intel commands my attention these days, but that is not to say that I wouldn't switch back to AMD in a future upgrade if their multi-cores turn out the juice.

Dollar for dollar though you will get more gaming power from a Core 2 then an AMD. But it is your system, and I hope you enjoy it.

Understood...but here's the thing: AMD will come out with the latest and greatest, and then Intell will top it. It's a never-ending cycle. I made up my mind a long time ago that I will stick with AMD. I could change, but then when AMD come out with their "Intel-killer", then people will be switching back. I'm not much into this AMD vs Intel war...I just picked my side, and will stay here.

See my point above. You pretty much said the same thing I did.

Antec P180b or Antec 900.

Also, change G7 to G5. If you don't mind the cord, I think wired > wireless wrt performance.

Lastly, When do you plan to upgrade your processor again? If you're not planning to upgrade anytime soon, you should probably build a Conroe system as you'll enjoy much more performance right now. (Especially since you're opting for a 8800GTX, you don't want your processor to be bottlenecking anything).

In the long run, when you do plan to upgrade, if AMD does develop a faster, more efficient processor, well, chances are you might want/have to upgrade your mobo as well.

What about soundcard?

Nice system. That X2 should be plenty of power for your rig.

Since it is a gaming machine, do you use WASD or arrow keys for movement? The G15 was not designed with arrow key movement in mind, you cannot move diagonally ie. hit right arrow + up arrow and hit another key at the same time. This forced me to return to using my MS 4000 keyboard, I cannot stand not being able to move diagonally while wanting to do anything else, ie. reload, walk, etc.

Thanks. The P180 was my first choice.

I got a MX518...so if it becomes too big of a problem, I can always switch.

Yea...I agree..but if I'm not getting the most out of my CPU/Mobo, I'll just change. I want to go with the AMD combo first, and if I'm not satisfied, I'll go with the Conroe.

For the monitor I currently use the Samsung 244T and couldn't be happier. One thing to note, when I first start it up it looks like it's ghosting but it's just the pixels warming up, after a minute everything is solid.

The various modes are very handy, There's: Entertain - A very bright mode for movies/games, Internet - much darker than Entertain, for browsing the net, and Text - an even darker version for spreadsheet work etc.

I rarely game or watch a movie without Entertain, though with HDR the brightness is quite overwhelming. In CS:S I can't even see my ammo/health against the bright yellow sand w/HDR on.

Internet is okay unless you are browsing a white website/forum, then it can be overwhelming. If I'm doing work and browsing sometimes I will switch down to Text to make it easier. You can also make your own color setting.

I think it's down in the 800-900 range now, I bought mine @ 1400 but it was worth every penny, though now I may be looking at getting a full on LCD TV/Monitor.
