Default the noob just can't figure it out-help?

I have installed kubuntu 6.10 and have a nvidia geforce fx 5500 with two monitors on it. only one monitor works and I have tried for two days know to install the update drivers for it. it says i have to exit the Xserver and I don't know what that is or how to do it? also tried to install automatix2 but it says error reading line 40 of source list and it wont let me edit and save it.

any help please

Once that is installed, you can use the 'nvidia-settings' program to make various adjustments to the setup of your second monitor.
