Default Re: Frequesnt screen flickers and occasional os crash

I registered here only to confirm this problem on my Vaio FE11H.
I have the same video card (Geforce Go 7400) using the driver 1.0-9746.

I'm using beryl too, but with different options than riteshsarraf's....
I put all as "automatic", but in my tests I can confirm this behaviour with every kind of beryl advanced options...

I think I have a similar problem:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=84903
But I am using GeForce Go7300 with an official SUSE kernel.

up!
This bug is really annoying!
Does anyone can tell us what to do? Will it be fixed in the next realease ?

This is my dmesg out:
Code:

But I think I was able to find more information. As per my previous comment, I think I'm wrong that gcc or any IO intensive load is the reason for the problem.

I noticed today, that this problem is reproducible, irrespective of the system load, as soon as a flash enabled site is opened.

I'm not sure how they could be interconnected but IMO flash rendering is causing this bug reproducible.

Thanks,
Ritesh

Flash, or anything else isn't the issue. Probably the nvidia driver is causing memory corruption.

Attaching my nvidia-bug-report.log and nvidia-installer.log.

For sure the Flash Plugin is not the problem. This problem occurr from time to time and it's not predictable anyway.

Dear Users,

This thread is around 1.5 months old with no acknowledgement from the developers on nVIDIA (Oh!!! This website is not officially endorsed by nVIDIA).

The answer you get is, try:
1) To disable CPU scaling (which I won't, that's important for me/my laptop to be cool)
2) Are you using Composite extension in X (Hell Yeah!!! That's why I bought an nVIDIA GPU for my laptop)

So let's not bug them more. The fellow developers might be very very very busy in sorting out issues for their drivers to be "Microsoft Windows Vista Ready".
They're not free to acknowledge and work on this bug. And we're not the only ones. There are many like us.

I'd rather suggest all of us to move to the Nouveau project and help the developers there and see if they can come up with a driver which can suffice our requirements.
http://nouveau.freedesktop.org

I understand the points nVIDIA makes, that it can't open up its specs and also that it can't ship proper drivers for its Linux users and also that it can't acknowledge bugs from its users and also that it doesn't care how many users confirm the bug.

We now understand that you make "World Class GPUs".

I also see this issue - the screen goes black for 1/5 of a second. I'm using beryl on ubunty feisty. 2.6.20 kernel, Xorg 7.2, nvidia 9631.

Sometimes the flicker freezes the screen, but I can still move the mouse (and kill X). Sometimes it freezes the whole system completely. It seems to me that a grabbed focus + flicker makes it worse.

Also seen here: http://forum.beryl-project.org/viewt...hp?f=36&t=3025

Oh, and I'm on a Dell XPS M1710 laptop, with a Go 7900 GTX.

Same here, with opensuse 10.2 x86_64, on ASUS A8Js, Go 7700, fresh install + beryl-snapshot. On high load i get NVRM: Xid lines in the dmesg buffer and black flickers. Occasionally the X server would hang, and can be killed via ssh and restarted.

Code:
NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0000 14f8 ffffffff 0000f848 00f8f8f3 00000001
NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 30,  L1 -> L0
NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 1, Channel 00000000 Method 00000060 Data 0101020c
I didn't experience hard crashes of the kernel, but sometimes the ipw module (that according to /proc/interrupts is sharing the irq with nvidia) starts showing a weird behaviour (disconnecting from network, logging strange errors) at the same time the display starts flashing black, and recovers when i shut down X.

I can reproduce it, though not so reliabily it takes minutes of trying, loading a large, flash/small text filled page in firefox and scrolling it fast with either the mouse wheel or dragging the bar. It seems related to high load, fast screen updates. Not sure about high network traffic.

I have a second machine (not laptop) with more modest 6150 and exactly the same (software) configuration that is totally stable.
Too bad I tried on that machine, was perfectly satisfied with it and went buying a laptop with a more powerful gpu.

thanks
hobs

Same problems here, just another nvidia pita

Sometimes crashes/flickers occur when watching tv via kaffeine or
also when being idle doing nothing(...)

I also have a ipw3945 card, but it does NOT share IRQ with nvidia (nothing does), but I still have flickers...
