I have Xorg 7.2 (7.1.99.903) and I'm running into some trouble.
The desktop doesn't totally freeze, I can see superkarambas network applet showing network activity, mouse is still moving around, but it seems not to respond to input actions (panels are not shown when I move mouse to edge, aplets are not reacting to click, icons neither). After switching to console and using top I saw Xorg eating up cpu constantly, so I generated a bug report. At the end I was able to reset xorg using ctrl+alt+backspace. Is it possible to see from bug report what could cause that? After that incident (it is not the first time) I disabled: Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True" Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "True" Option "Composite" "Enable" which I enabled from a beryl guide. Does this problem occur as soon as X is started or after some period of time/activity?
Does this problem still persist after you disabled the Composite extension? Thanks, Lonni |

I too have been seeing this new bug since i installed the .9746 driver. On my Laptop, the screen just starts glitching for no reason and eventually the desktop beryl/xfce4 locks up and a reboot is required.
On a side note, is there any darn news on the black screens yet, i am so dam tired of only being able to have 3 windows open before opening another results in a unless black screen? |

Q2. I don't think that's the right approach to ask every user about, "Does this help, Does that help.". I'm sure you should be having a lab there. Why don't you guys try reproducing the bug in your lab ? Thanks, Ritesh |

I'm having crashes/lockups too, and i'd be more than happy to get nvidia employees answers to questions if that helps them fix my bug sooner. Look around this forum, there's a *lot* of people with problems, you think they're gonna reproduce every single system out there? |

I wasn't using beryl when this happened. I also don't use kde effects that requires composite extension. |

I think it is because of composite extension. Using xorg without it for a couple of days and everything was ok.
Now I reenabled composite and first issues started to show up. After six hours of uptime, Xorg is using a large amount of memory (370MB and growing), and I'm afraid it will fill up all memory. For now I'll disable composite again. |

I installed older drivers, version 9631 and Xorg lockups and growing memory usage is gone (even when using composite). I can remember having this problem when I installed 97xx, but at first I thought it was because xorg.

Now the machine is running more than 12 hours continuously with 9631 nvidia driver and composite extension enabled.
There is no memory growth in Xorg process, ram usage is normal. Now I'm certain there is something wrong with new 97xx display driver. Where can I fill a bug report? |

You already did file a bug report here. However, I'll still need details from you on specifically how to reproduce this problem.

There is no step-by-step instruction to reproduce this.
Sometimes xorg start to eat up memory when browsing (I start to notice sluggish scroling through pages), sometimes when I unlock my kde session I see mem usage applet showing enormous memory usage (caused by xorg - I lock my session when I leave computer). I'm going to install 9746 again and try to reproduce this in a more reliable way. |

I think those freezes are related to power management, yesterday I was playing ut2k4 and Xorg memory usage didn't increase a bit, so it is not 3d related, even if I leave computer without any programs running (just desktop) nothing bad happens either. So the only thing left might be because of monitor power management (standby / suspend / power off feature), because this increases starts over night. The only thing different is that graphic card pushes monitor into standby after 40 min (40 min standby, 50 min suspend, 60 min power off).
Can I test this with: Code:
xset dpms force off |
