Just started a GL-app under metacity with...

Code:
...
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "true"
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "true"
Option "BackingStore" "true"
...
Option "Composite" "true"
...
... running for 3 minutes now.

Best regards...

It's not AddARGBGLXVisuals or compiz. I just started glitz-test and gl-cairo-aatrick (git clone git://people.freedesktop.org/~macslow/gl-cairo-aatrick) under metacity and it didn't take 30 seconds for the freeze to occur. I tried with and without AddARGBGLXVisuals being enabled.

I assume it's Composite, AllowGLXWithComposite or both. Testing those now. Gee I restarted my desktop box probably more than 40 times this day/night

Best regards...

F**K^3!!!

Sorry, but I'm slowly loosing my sanity.

With these settings in xorg.conf:

Code:
...
Option "RenderAccel" "true"
Option "DisableGLXRootClipping" "true"
Option "AllowGLXWithComposite" "true"
Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "false"
Option "BackingStore" "true"
...
Option "Composite" "false"
...
running gl-cairo-aatrick and glitz-test my machine froze again within 15 seconds.

Restarted everything this time with...

Code:
...
Option "RenderAccel" "false"
...
and the machine didn't even last 10 seconds until it froze again.

Unless I've overlooked something, I'm not seeing any clear pattern here on what does or does not trigger the hang. How confident are you that your hardware isn't faulty?

There's no way I can test this. I would need replacement-components for at least the motherboard and graphics-card.

Best regards...

Argl! To add to that... one of the freezes (forced reboots) obviously caused a HD-failure and now I have an I/O-error when something in the systems tries to stat /usr/sbin/tzconfig (apparently the journaling feature of ext3 was stressed one time too often), which causes pending package-updates on my Ubuntu-machine to fail now. In addition to that also the nvidia driver no longer loads (a file called /usr/lib/xserver/SecurityPolicy could not be found).

All this is turning out worse and worse :/

Regards...
