Default 9742/6 xvmc and xv with 8800gtx

Hi all,

I am having a major problem with my 8800 gtx and Xv/XvMC:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1920x1440"
(--) NVIDIA(0): No video decoder detected
(II) Loading extension NV-GLX
(II) NVIDIA(0): NVIDIA 3D Acceleration Architecture Initialized

The first line after the resolution setting is the problem; in addition xdpyinfo shows the Xvideo-MotionCompensation missing with the 8800 (even though it gets initialised ealier in the Xorg.0.log). I do not get this with the same 9746 drivers with a 6800GT plugged in - Xv and XvMC both work fine with the older card.

Could I have bought a "budget" card by mistake without an XvMC support?

Strangely plain old Xv works with xine and mplayer with the 8800, but in mythtv neither "Standard" or "Standard XvMC" work at all (I get sound but a black screen when trying to watch TV or recordings). Everything works with both Xv and XvMC when the 6800GT is plugged in.

System:

2xOpteron 252
4GB RAM
6800GT or 8800GTX
Gentoo, 64-bit kernel:
Linux beast 2.6.18-gentoo-r3 #3 SMP Thu Dec 21 09:51:04 GMT 2006 x86_64 AMD Opteron(tm) Processor 252 GNU/Linux
Driver 9746

BTW, I have Composite disabled, just a basic config - do I have to disable GLX to get any kind of video acceleration?

If you want me post a debug log I can, however everything that I can see in system logs looks normal apart from that bit about the video decoder not being found

Anyone else with an 8800GTX having Xv/XvMC problems? I'd like to know!

Cheers

Alex

Maybe I should rephrase this:

Is anyone using an 8800GTX and having *no* problems with XV and XVMC?

Thanks

XvMC is not currently supported on the 8800. Xv should work fine.

Thanks Aaron,

Plain Xv works great with xine/mplayer, but with mythtv I get a black screen when trying to watch tv or recorded programs (mpeg2 format). The sound plays, just no video.

When will XvMC be supported on 8800? Is it being worked on at all?

Thanks

Alex

If the same video works in Mplayer and not in MythTV, then that sounds like a MythTV bug.

I'm afraid I can't comment on feature schedules.

Exclamation Re: 9742/6 xvmc and xv with 8800gtx

Has anyone gotten a resolution on this? It's been driving me nuts all weekend. Am I to assume that the 8800 won't do MythTV????

TIA

Yes, it looks this way with the current driver, since XvMC isn't yet supported on 8800 and Xv seems broken in myth with this card.

I find it very odd that it works *perfectly* with my 6800GT and the *very same* drivers - a direct hardware swap.

It's a right royal PITA!

I did the exact same thing, swapping out my 7800 this morning. I'd still like confirmation that MythTV and the 8800 are broken if NVidia can provide it. I'll also ask on MythTV-Users but this is really NVidia's problem.

Thanks for the response.

It looks like a problem with MythTV as well.

In the playback settings you can choose libmpeg2, Xv, XvMC etc for video playback. Obviously XvMC isn't supported yet by the drivers, but none of the other methods work either (even standard)

It is not a problem with Myth. The driver is broken. You can read the details about it at mythtv ticket trac.
