Default slow FPS based from glxgears, help please

Hi folks,

I'm troubleshooting an app that uses opengl. However, the peformance is poor. I ran glxgears locally to find out what the results where and here is what I got.

298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.600 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.800 FPS
298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.600 FPS
298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.600 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.800 FPS
298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.600 FPS
298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.600 FPS
298 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.600 FPS

I ran it for 5 mins, and it averages 59 FPS. I saw other people's glxgears result from the web and they're in thousands. Hmmm, something must be wrong with my settings. Can someone please help me?

Here are other results of other tools.

[root@localhost ~]# cat /proc/driver/nvidia/agp/status
Status: Enabled
Driver: NVIDIA
AGP Rate: 8x
Fast Writes: Enabled
SBA: Enabled

[mythtv@localhost root]$ glxinfo|grep direct
direct rendering: Yes
direct rendering: Yes

result of glxinfo command above becomes 1 line if I change my xorg.conf to single head but performance is still 59 FPS.

Generate and attach nvidia-bug-report.

Attached is the bug report. Actually, the result has always been like that even on the earlier binary drivers I've installed. So I don't know what's going on, maybe some configuration I missed.

I started x with verbosity set to 6.

Please help me.

Thanks!

Is anything other than glxgears not performing well?
Does this problem persist with an official FC3 kernel?
Does this problem persist if you're only using a single display device, or twinview?
Have you verified that you're using the latest motherboard BIOS?

Thanks,
Lonni

I have the same exact problem. I posted something about it earlier, but didn't get any useful suggestions.

its a 2.8 p4 ht, gig of ram, Kubuntu 6.10 latest kernel, with a nvidia 5500. The older drivers (8xxx) i got 1000+ outta glxgears, now (9 something, not the latest as of yet) i'm lucky to get 60. When i tried to install the older drivers, i keep getting weird compile errors. I eventually gave up after patching the source with tons of diffrent fixes that were suggested.

I can post what ever info that's needed.

composite extension enabled? then disable it and glxgears is faster.

Either choices, the FPS are always the same. About the kernel, I'm no longer using the FC3 kernel. I built my own using source from kernel.org. Is there anything that you want me to check to see if I forgot to enable it during "make menuconfig"?

I will check about this.

How do I check it? What is that option?

I'm just adding this hoping it might help with the troubleshooting

[root@localhost linux]# ls -l /usr/lib/libGL*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 21 Jan 4 00:42 /usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1 -> libGLcore.so.1.0.9746

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 31 Feb 7 2005 /usr/lib/libGLU.so.1 -> ../../usr/X11R6/lib/libGLU.so.1

EDIT:

Ahhhhhh, could this be the culprit?

[root@localhost lib]# ls -l /usr/X11R6/lib/libGL*

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 645266 Mar 8 2005 /usr/X11R6/lib/libGLU.a

here is more what I've found out. Am I correct that my glxinfo is using an old GL library and not the nvidia's opengl library?

[root@localhost lib]# ldd /usr/X11R6/bin/glxinfo
linux-gate.so.1 => (0xffffe000)
libGLU.so.1 => /usr/lib/libGLU.so.1 (0xb7ea5000)
libXext.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libXext.so.6 (0x4c83e000)
libX11.so.6 => /usr/X11R6/lib/libX11.so.6 (0x4c775000)
libpthread.so.0 => /lib/tls/libpthread.so.0 (0x005c2000)
libm.so.6 => /lib/tls/libm.so.6 (0x004ac000)
libc.so.6 => /lib/tls/libc.so.6 (0x00380000)
libGLcore.so.1 => /usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1 (0xb7533000)
libnvidia-tls.so.1 => /usr/lib/tls/libnvidia-tls.so.1 (0xb7531000)
libdl.so.2 => /lib/libdl.so.2 (0x004d1000)
/lib/ld-linux.so.2 (0x00367000)

libGLU is different than libGL

I'm still not clear on whether this problem is also present with the official FC3 kernel?

So rather than I spend my time troubleshooting this issue, should I just upgrade to FC6?

It will be a very tough upgrade though since it's from FC3 to FC6.
