Default 1.0-7184 Legacy driver, no X Server Display Configuration

Hi guys!
I've been trying to install various NVIDIA drivers but not succeeding. First trying the newest drivers 9631, but this wont work when I reboot and the X Server finds out the kernel-versions don't match. Well that's a newbie error.
Later I tried to install 7184 Legacy, since the kernel-versions should match. Everything works as before, though I find no GUI-way to change resolution like the 9631 version (After installing and going into X again with "telinit 3" I can change resolution and much more stuff in a part of NVIDIA X Server Configuration called "X Server Display Configuration" (or if I remember wrong, something like that).
With 7184 this is not present so how can i change resolution? Isn't this "window" supposed to be there? Should I add modes in the xorg.conf for the resolution I want?
Operating System: Ubuntu 6.10 - Edgy Eft

The display configuration page is only available in newer drivers. The 1.0-71xx legacy drivers still need to be configured using the traditional method of editing xorg.conf.

Thanks for your reply. So I just need to add the resolution, and then I can change it in the usual way in Ubuntu?
How can I make the 9631 driver work. Do I need to update my kernel then?

Make sure you uninstall the Ubuntu driver packages before trying to install using the .run files.

How do I do that? I don't recall reading anything on having to do this before installing the drivers.
