Default Fan speed control of 8800 under Linux ?

I have a new 8800GTS but the fan speed is stuck at 60% and the card idle at 67-68C - which is a tad hot to my taste. Especially as I push games now with max settings (AAx16, AF max), I see occasionnal screen stutters even in "simple" game such as WoW.

Under Windows I was able to speed up fan to 100% for an idle temp of ~56C. But nVidia control does not allow that under Linux.

Do Linux users have any solution not to burn their card ??

Perhaps try asusfan:

This command line tool allows you to control the speed of your graphics card's fan, which usually runs at full speed under Linux. It has been tested with models V9999 and V9750TD and may work with other cards as well.
There may be other such tools but that is the only one I know about. I have never used it ...

I kinda doubt this can be used for controlling fan of the GPU.

Nvclock can adjust the fanspeed on a lot of Nvidia cards including some GeforceFX 5800/5900 boards and most Geforce6 and Geforce7 boards. Some of the cards use GPU functionality for doing this and some use an external sensor chip (ADT7473, F75375s and more). Nvclock supports all those situations and that asusfan tool only the F757375 one and that tool is based on Nvclock code.

I haven't added Geforce8 support to Nvclock yet as I have been quite busy. I hope to look into that soon and perhaps that will give you Geforce8 fanspeed control support.

I failed to setup asusfan so far...

But thanks. Looking forward for nvclock

PS: let me know if there is any information I can provide to add 8800 support to nvclock.

I have added some basic geforce8 support to the cvs version of nvclock (you can find it on sourceforge). It likely won't do much yet but I would be mostly interested in its debug output using nvclock -D. If you could pm or email me that, that would be helpfull.

I sent you my debug output as pm. Hopefully you can save my card...

PS: Does nVidia planning to do anything about that or not ??

I have added Geforce8800 fanspeed control to the CVS version of NVClock. A few users have tested and for them it works. I haven't been able to test it myself since I don't have a Geforce8. If there are issues please mention them.

Most excellent, and a huge thanks! My card has been running at 70C under almost no load at all. I used your utility to bump the fan speed up to 100% duty cycle and now it's running at 60C under the same load.

You have certainly made my day, thanks.
