Default [HOWTO] install NVIDIA 1.0-9631 for GeForce4 MX 4000 on Ubuntu Edgy Eft 6.10

that's my solution.... tested on Ubuntu Edgy Eft 6.10 (32bit)

everything now works well!!! yeah!!!!

these are the steps i've followed:
  1. download the latest version of Linux kernel (2.6.19.2)
    Code:
    sudo mv ./linux-2.6.19.2.tar.bz2 /usr/src/
    cd /usr/src/
    sudo tar –bzip2 -xvf linux-2.6.19.2.tar.bz2
  2. configure, compile and make with make-kpkg
    Code:
    cd /usr/src/linux-2.6.19.2
    Code:
    sudo make xconfig
OR (if you want to use the current kernel .config file)
    Code:
    sudo make oldconfig
    then
    Code:
    sudo make-kpkg clean
    sudo make-kpkg --append-to-version=-nvidiayeah --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers modules_image
  3. install new kernel and update grub
    Code:
    cd ..
install EVERY SINGLE .deb file with this command
    Code:
    sudo dpkg -i [FILE].deb
    then
    Code:
    ln -s /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.19.2-nvidiayeah ./linux
  4. reboot with new kernel
switch to terminal (CTRL+ALT+F1) and do login as root, then:
    Code:
    killall gdm
    if you use Gnome, or
    Code:
    killall kdm
    if you use KDE
  5. download NVIDIA driver (for GeForce4 MX 4000 -> new legacy driver) and start installation (as root)
    Code:
    mv ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9631-pkg1.run /usr/src/
    cd /usr/src
    chmod +x ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9631-pkg1.run
    ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9631-pkg1.run --extract-only
    cd ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9631-pkg1
    ./nvidia-installer
  6. configure X

doesn't installer find X.Org config files? don't worry, be happy and follow these instructions
  7. VERY IMPORTANT SETTINGS
    • Edit /etc/modprobe.d/options
      Code:
      sudo nano /etc/modprobe.d/options
and add these options at the end of file
      Code:
      options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=1
Save (CTRL+O) and close nano (CTRL+X).
    • edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
      Code:
      sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
In the "Section Screen" add these lines:
      Code:
             Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI" "TRUE"
             Option "ModeValidation" "DFP-0: NoEdidDFPMaxSizeCheck, NoVesaModes"

and in the "Section Device" add:
    Code:
           Option "NvAgp" "0"
If those options didn't work, try to replace them with the following
    Code:
           Option "ExactModeTimingsDVI"
           Option "UseEdidDpi" "false"
           Option "ModeValidation" "NoEdidDFPMaxSizeCheck, NoVesaModes"
If that configuration didn't work, try setting your /etc/modprobe.d/options instead of the one suggested before:
    Code:
           options nvidia NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=4
  8. optional : disable RenderAccel
    edit xorg.conf
    Code:
    sudo nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Get in the "Section Device" and add
    Code:
            Option "RenderAccel" "false"

That's all folks!
