Well, well, well... I imaged my system so I can try an install again. I performed another install and the same thing happened with the newest driver. I tried amd64 and x86 on two separate installs and the same thing happens.

Netllama.. perform a gentoo install and you can replicate this problem.

Thanks,
Tony

I've already tested with FC6, Ubuntu & SuSE-10.2 and wasn't able to reproduce the problem. I don't see any evidence in this thread to suggest that its specific to Gentoo.

Thanks for replying. I know that it isn't specific to gentoo since fyxim is running debian and ofourdan mentioned that he could reproduce it. I just wanted you to setup gentoo and see if you can reproduce it and maybe troubleshoot the problem. As I mentioned, after the problem began, I installed the x86 version again and it happened again. I then deleted it and installed the amd64 version with the x64 nvidia driver (the latest of course) and the problem was still there.
There is a problem somewhere. There are three people who are running different versions of linux with the same hardware that are having this problem. Can it be platform specific? I know that we are all running the 7950gtx card on a dell xps m1710. Has anyone with another laptop and this card have this issue?

Thanks,
Tony

i'm having this problem as well. exactly as it's been described. it loads x just fine...but if i go back to a console for any reason - the screen is garbled, completely illegible and x won't restart in a clean fashion.

system: openSUSE 10.2
Dell m1710
nVidia 7950 GTX

i've tried gnome and kde both thinking maybe it had something to do with it for some reason....but of course the wm isn't the problem. it seems to be the driver. i also disabled XGL - again...no effect. the problem appears as soon as i've installed the nVidia driver.

any updates on this?

I am having the EXACT same problem. Dell XPS m1710 running on FC6 with Beryl and AIGLX. Problems started after installing the latest nVidia driver...

I wound up reading this thread after experiencing the same behaviour on a totally different machine, after upgrading from the 1.0.9631 driver to the 1.0.9746 driver, also running Gentoo and Xorg-7.1.1. However, downgrading to 1.0.8776 got my system back and functioning; haven't tried going back to the 9631 driver yet. too much work to do now that things are back to normal.

I just tried the Nvidia 1.0.9751 driver and the same thing. Is this being addressed? Is there anything else we can do?

Yes, I'm using the same notebook as everyone else, and I'm not able to replicate this problem. Unless someone can provide me with a notebook that replicates the issue, I'm afraid that there's nothing further that I can do on this issue.

Thanks,
Lonni

I perfectly understand. There has got to be something with the laptops, Lot#, etc... The only people who have had problems with this (or the only ones that have posted) are people with XPS M1710 laptops with the 7950GTX card.

Is there anyone on this board that owns this laptop besides Netllama, that doesn't have this issue?
