Same problem here and I'm not on the same hardware. I'm on an amd64 box with a GeForce 7600 GS card.

This problem has been around for the 2 years I have been using nvidia drivers. The only solution I've found is to recompile the kernel without support for framebuffer and then use vga=normal in lilo.conf (don't know how you would do this with grub).

This way you get 640x480 screen but you can use a smaller font 'setfont -v alt-8x8' fe. Not as nice as 1024x768 with a logo but at least the screen is readable.

This problem has been posted several times but no response from nvidia.

geezer,
I think you're experiencing a different problem than what is being discussed in this thread, as several people here are having issues and they aren't using kernels with any framebuffer support.

As for your statement that NVIDIA hasn't responded, I've personally stated in several threads that using console framebuffer graphics with the NVIDIA X driver is an unsupported configuration.

Thanks,
Lonni

Confirmed, stuck with a beautiful vga-16 console and no framebuffer device here.
At least it reminds me a lot of years ago, you know...

What I'm talking about is switching to a vt from x using ctrl-alt-fN, or closing x down. The text is garbled when using the nvidia driver but not using plain nv.

AFAIK most distros have framebuffer support compiled into the kernel by default, but if you recompile without fb support the problem is solved.

kokoko3k: Try my idea of changing the terminal font to 8x8. It's much more usable. All you need to do is (providing 8x8 font is available) put the command in a startup file.

Slackware uses /etc/rc.d/rc.font but I wouldn't know about other distros.

You can also use a program 'setconsolefont' to test available fonts (as root).

Having the same problem with my new M1710 after being switched on overnight.
Also noticed that the fn screen brightness buttons(which incidently don't do as advertised, i.e. screen remains on brightest backlight) cause X to reset, ie similar to ctl alt backspace.
Using the 1.0-9631 rpm as downloaded via FC6 yum install i.e. :

kmod-nvidia-96xx.x86_64 1.0.9631-4.2.6.19_1.29
xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-96xx.x86_64 1.0.9631-5.lvn6

HTH

I think most users having this issue with m1710 doesn't have any problem switching to a vt. Only by killing X will this problem occur, for me at least, and I'm not running any framebuffer.

My brightness buttons works perfectly, what happens if you change the value with /proc/acpi/video/VID/LCD/brightness ?

It won't allow me to save file changes, saying that it has changed since visited or saved...
it has the values of:
levels: 100 36 12 24 36 48 60 72 84 100
current: 0

Hi - I am also having this problem with Kubuntu (32 and 64 bit)

The nv driver works, albeit no 3D, and the Nvidia drivers corrupts the display when exiting X

I can jump to a console while X is running, but the moment X stops, the display is corrupted.

New laptop - most disappointed after contantly hearing that Nvidia was the way to go for linux anly to find it screws up royally

Dell XPS M1710
2GB RAM
T7400 (2.16 Ghz Cor 2 Duo)
nVidia 7950 GTX
120GB SATA drive

Any luck with this issue?

Its really annoying!

Cheers

Rod.

I have opened a ticket with Dell via a vendor contract as the company I work for has bought 100 XPSM1710s and has the same issues on all of them, and everytime we contact nvidia they refuse to address the issue

If I get anything back from Dell I will let you guys know
