Arrow GeForce GO 7900 GS & Nvidia-driver-1.0-9746 => freeze on current

I'm experiencing big problems with Go 7900 GS (in a Dell Inspiron 9400) and driver-1.0-9746.
I cannot do a extensive catalog of every of them, but after installing the new driver, switching to a console (like ctrl+alt+F1) would totally freeze the computer.
Also, it seems to prevent xfce to start (through I am not sure of this point)

Installing a previous version (namely 8776) made it work.

I would appreciate any comment.
