Default Re: beryl black windows bug

Hehe!

Please let me tease you up a bit. I have beryl working full-blown on an old O&M notebook which has an ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY card with only 32Mb of RAM! Furthermore, I am using the stock xorg radeon driver, since their new fglrx won't work on this old hardware. And if you think it's performance sucks, think again. It's only a Pentium III 800Mhz notebook with 256Mb RAM and I'll assure you, it's a bit faster than my Toshiba Satellite 1415-S173 which has a 1.8Ghz celeron processor, 512Mb RAM and an nVidia geforce Go 420 card. In both cases I am using AIGLX to avoid the black-window problem. Of course this comparison refers to general windows responsiveness and not to the full data processing capabilities.

Come on nVidia people! This bug has been around for too long now. Please do something! or else people might start saying that you could be lagging behind the competition in the Linux world (and perhaps out of it). When will you give us stable drivers that make full use of our well-payed hardware, even that which has been put to legacy (perhaps prematurely)? I am and always was an nVidia fan, but I am seriously beginning to think that it was about time I reviewed my position.

A final word about legacy tagging: it's a very interesting tool to fixing bugs!

PS: I have 4 other computers in the house and 2 at work, all of them have nVidia cards.

I find it interesting that on my PCI-E card I dont have such a problem. It has 256MB memory. How could it be that a 8800 PCI-E with so much more RAM produces the problem, while mine doesnt. I dont see the reason. Driverwise it shouldnt be such a big problem to solve if some Nvidia cards already dont present the bug.

Just a me too message. I have the black window problem and I can't run Beryl because of it. Here's some info that might help the developer(s):

OS: Ubuntu Feisty
NVIDIA Driver Version: 1.0-9755
X Server: Version 11.0, The X.Org Foundation, 7.2.0 (70200000)
Resolution: 1600x1200
GPU: GeForce 6200 TurboCache(TM)

Yes, you can! if you use --use-copy or --force-aiglx, at the expense of your frame-rate. I've found that --use-copy is a bit faster than plain aiglx on nvidia. The opposite is true on ATI.

The problem only occurs if you are using Bery/Compiz with Texture From Pixmap enabled and I BELIEVE you have to be using NVidia's own GLX rendering, IE, non AIGLX or XGL (somebody correct me if I'm wrong here). I was not experiencing the "bug" when I was using AIGLX, but NVidia's own GLX rendering was supposed to be faster, which is why I switched and thus, have henceforth, been "dealing" with the bug. I, like most others here, have been using the "Copy" method in the interim, which does NOT cause the issue to occur, but is definitely noticeably slower than using TFP.

Perhaps you are using Copy? Perhaps you are using AIGLX instead of NVidia's GLX implementation? Perhaps you just haven't opened up enough windows to experience the bug. There is obviously a REASON that you are not experiencing it and I doubt very much it simply has to do with your hardware........... As it is the DRIVER that is buggy, it has nothing to do with the cards.

You're right, I haven't experienced the defect when using AIGLX. Thanks for the tip.

Exclamation Re: beryl black windows bug

I think the earliest possible release of a beta would be a very good idea.

Come on, give us something!
Is there anyway that we could help speed things along, send a letter to Nvidia, etc...?

I am definitely tired of waiting.

I am definitely tired of waiting.
When I worked as a software engineer for a mainstream computer manufacturer (not too long ago), I used to write patches as quick fixes, for it was unacceptable to make the users wait. This was an absolute priority. Then we could have some peace of mind to work on the development of new releases knowing that our customers were happy. After all, fixing minor problems is easy, and harder problems always have a workaround.

The purpose of new releases must not be to fix problems presented by previous releases, but rather to fix potential problems, to add support for new hardware, to add missing or desirable functionalities and to make more efficient use of resources, in decreasing priority order.

Having said that, I would like to mention that some people might have overlooked that fact that a workaround for the black window problem exists already. There are two options: to add --use-copy or --force-aiglx. Both will kill your framerates, but I found them to be acceptable (for the time being), even on my old GeForce4. This was verified to work at least for some people.

I am using "no COW", nvidia render path, texture from pixmap, no XGL. Opened 24 terminal (working on a desktop of 1280x1024) and no black window bug've shown up. Using latest nvidia driver and beryl 0.2.1.

EDIT: I opened the 25th terminal window and the bug appeared. Thanks for the suggestion... Okay +1 vote for new correct driver
