I think for some of the ignorant people in this thread NVIDIA should actually just disable their experimental tfp implementation and release a new driver without it and there would be no complains at all.

It's ridiculous to say "but Intel works!" and "I don't buy an NVIDIA card cause I thought I would work with new desktop effects!". There is NO other driver having such a tfp implementation from any other vendor.

So just freaking do what you would do without it and what everyone with a non-NVIDIA card actually has to do to have beryl/compiz: Use AIGLX or XGL.

NVIDIA is working on it; understand that.

Here is my +1 for this petition... when reaching the 9th maximized window this bug appears in my 6600 with 128mb... It's really annoying...
Please do something!

I also have this problem, and eagerly await a fix. I wonder how many people are using x86 versions of linux. Is it true that 64 bit will use up your vram twice as fast; the same way it uses your system ram twice as fast? Perhaps, then, this problem is more dramatic on x86 64 systems which may explain the inconsistency between some users.

Why would anything like that happen? Sounds quite weird to me. Programs that run on a 64 bit processor uses likely the same amount of RAM as on any other platform. It only means that addresses can be specified in a wider range at once and floating point operations can be more precise or things like that. Besides I am using an AMD64 and havent encounter any such trouble as these except black window bug and it doesnt seem to be more dramatic than on 32 bit.

Unless there is a serious memory leak in the driver, I think I can do just fine with less than 25 windows on my GeForce 6200 (NV44) and 64bit system. I haven't seen that bug on this particular machine yet.

However, on my GeForce4 (NV17)-equiped notebook, I can't open more than one or two windows before it's black face shows up.

Just for info:
I use beryl with KDE on OpenSuSE 10.2 with 9755 driver without XGL just with composite extension in Xorg!! I have an old FX 5200 card, Athlon XP 2600+, 768Mb RAM and runs nearly full featured with almost 100 fps!! Good gaming (Racer runs with 35 fps in 1024x768 32bit resolution only without antialiasing!! just 10 fps less than normal non composite desktop!!) DRI is ON (Very important!!!) and nvidia-settings works fine also.
I tried also with XGL...
The result was DRI off, nvidia-settings not working(meaning that also values are not loaded), Racer not running at all as well as other 3d games-programs, and the few 3d apps that worked were running awful! Not only slow but corrupted for example Neverball was a mess!
And generally my FX 5200 was very depressed overall!!
For OpenSuSE 10.2 there are detailed instructions in the official site http://en.opensuse.org/Beryl on how to install and use beryl with or without XGL! It might be useful instructions even for other distros too! Check it out!!
Also try to use the latest snapshot of Beryl! Lots of fixes there!!
Beryl worths trying it's fantastic! Even I couldn't believe it's features and effects that are also very useful excellent work!! I couldn't also believe that my normal old fashioned PC could destroy monsters with thousands of Euro prices and Windows Vista running, just with LINUX and BERYL!!! Bye Bye Bill...!

Sorry for saying that much...
On the topic now... the bug comes for me too when I open the 25th window of the same application (I checked it with konsole) and I also had three more different windows opened. Do you get the bug only with the same window or even when you open 25 different windows? Has anybody checked the 25 windows without beryl in normal 2d stage? What about Gnome and beryl? Still the same results?

Ok I 've made some tests... (no XGL)
In the best combination of beryl's advanced options(texture from pixmap, don't use cow, strict binding, indirect rendering) I got to the 37th window to go black, just with konsole 37 windows and nothing else running. The use of COW option freezes my machine when I try to turn the cube so I checked it without turning the cube when on. The only solution for me too was when I switched from Texture From Pixmap to Copy! Then I got a 60+ windows without any problem but the performance dropped dramatically!! With Copy everything worked fine no black bug at all but a lot slower.
Hope I helped a bit now...

Hey I found another solution too!
Leave the Texture from Pixmap on and select Force AIGLX!! Better performance than Copy, 60+ windows none of them black!
With this setting you get a bit less than the top performance but you don't get the bug!!
Hope to help more now...

I have more results from the tests!!
The BEST combination is: Texture from Pixmap, Force AIGLX, XGL binding the others leave to automatic!!! 2fp/s more in Racer than the default automatic settings and 60+ windows faster than the default settings and none black!!
Check it out!!
Worked perfectly for me (no XGL or AIGLX just X)!!

I used 'Force AIGLX' and render from pixmap but performance is quite a bit worse for me than with NVIDIA. Sorry, I still await the fix.

Hey fellows,

hear this: I have two setups:

1. O&M notebook: Pentium III 800Mhz, 256Mb RAM, ATI Radeon Mobility M6 LY, AIGLX.

2. Toshiba Satellite 1415-S173: Celeron 1.8Ghz, 512Mb RAM, nVidia GeForce4 420 Go, nVidia GL

both running Fedora Core 7 (actually 6.92), kernel 2.6.20, with xorg 7.1.1. and gnome 2.16.3, 1024x768 resolution and similar xorg.conf. Guess which one's desktop is faster, smoother and more responsive while using less resources (according to gkrellm)? Want a hint? Sic!
