Default TwinView - Triple screen/multiple gfx cards support?

Im just curious, as this is the current "thing" stopping me from migrating to Linux on the desktop. I know I can do it with either all Xinerama, or TwinView + Xinerama (which messes up the TwinView, doesnt work the same as it does just as TwinView), and the performance with just Xinerama is awful.

So, are there any plans to support more than one card with TwinView? I dont quite know how it is implemented in Windows, but I know it works fine, OpenGL on all screens is fine and performance is fine. I would like to see the same kind of performance etc in Linux with a Triple Head setup.

Thanks

So I'm guessing this is a no, or a no idea type answer? Im really not trying to troll, I just REALLY want to switch to Linux, but 3 scrren performance is pretty important, and I am sure there are many others out there wondering the same thing.

No, TwinView only works across the displays on a single GPU.

I think that Xinerama actually scales pretty well: UMark-ONS gives
me 55.5 FPS on a single 7800GTX at 1600x1200 while a triple head
3840x1024 setup with two 7800GTX does 49.9 FPS ...
(First card: 2560x1024 twinview. Second card at 1280x1024
tied in with xinerama).

I'm using fvwm95 (KDE and Gnome simple don't fullfill my requirement),
so the problem with the missing TwinView-Xinerama extension when
Xorg Xinerama is active doesn't apply to me (because fvwm95 doesn't
use any Xinerama-Info anyway), but i would nevertheless be interessted
in a solution for that - maybe KDE or Gnome will fit my need at some
point in time in future :-)

regards

Bernhard

It might be my hardware, but I have a 6800GT and a 5200FX (PCI) on a P4 3GHz, with 2GB RAM and on Windows performance is excellent, whereas screen redraw etc is shocking on Linux (latest drivers, latest Ubuntu etc). Using it day to day is a very painful experience, as it is easy to feel it lagging to move windows around etc, and this is without any "special" enchancements, like XGL etc.

Pure speculation: maybe the nvidia linux driver doesn't like mixing
different GPU families and does fallback to software rendering?
Can you please generate and post an nvidia-bug-report.log?

You can use screens driven by different GPUs, but the advertised capabilities will be the intersection of the individual GPUs' capabilities; please see http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree8...ppendix-v.html for additional Xinerama related information.

Here is the bug report - http://eclair.kiddygrade.org/Files/n...bug-report.log

zander - Thankyou, I hadnt seen that section before, so that does explain some things.

JaXXon - After seeing the above page, I agree..it is just slightly confusing that on Windows I havent noticed this difference at all.

I am currently planning on upgrading, and will most likely get a motherboard that has 2 PCI-E(x16) slots, but I am not planning on running SLI - would I be correct in thinking that if I was not using SLI, I can use Xinerama and use more than 2 screens, in the same kind of config I have now, but with identical gfx cards?

Thanks!

I can see that you have three seperate screens rather than
using TwinView. This can be indeed a little bit annoying, because
dragging windows amongst screens causes refresh events
and the content of the window looks distorted for a short while.
However, applying TwinView causes undesired Xinerama information.

I have created a quick&dirty patch for libXinerama to overcome
that problem. For details, please refere to

I guess Windows doesn't cause refresh events for moving windows ...

IMHO, a compositing window manager for Linux (such as beryl) should
basically also overcome that issue, but this feature is not yet available
for Xinerama configurations :-(

I'm using two 7800GTX cards in an SLI capable mainboard, but configured
as a triple-head setup (since more than a year). The SLI bridge is applied
to the video cards so that i can switch to SLI "on the fly", if necessary.
