Talking QX6700 or X6800?

Dual Core or Quad Core? I realize right now that the X6800 can overclock further and plays games great. But this would be for the long run.

Has anyone heard if a faster Quad Core will be coming?

I'm not purchasing quite yet just getting prepared for my near future rig.

Only 2 options in the vote because honestly those are the only CPUs that I am considering right now.

Go Quad. You can always overclock, but you can't add additional cores.

Quad. If you wait, the higher bus speed ones will trickle their way from the Xeon line to the consumer line (hopefully). The new xeon quads run at 1300 FSB. Woot!

So when is the move to 1300 FSB happening? I've also been hearing things about DDR3 this summer. Mind you I hate waiting forever. Maybe this time I will get the DFI board (if it ever comes out, although I musty say I loved the striker extreme).

I say X6800 because Quad wont be much help with most applications and when tons of games start releasing with support for it you can probably get one that by stock is clocked faster then the x6800...

go for the fastest now, not what could be in the future.

The Kentsfields chips love a faster FSB. Running 1420 FSB (355x9=3195Mhz) on mine netted me almost 2,000 points in 3dmark 05 over the same clockspeed at 1066 FSB (266x12=3192). Really loving my chip.

loafer--What board are you running to get that kind of FSB w/ your quad?

@Tiki

Go with the QX6700. There's no reason at all to go with the X6800 when it's the same price. The Quad is only ~233mhz slower stock and will overclock just as well as the X6800 as long as you have some good water/phase.

In fact, I've seen lots of X6800's that couldn't overclock worth a darn compared to the rest of the C2D lineup. They seem to be pretty common. You're really talking about maybe a 200-300mhz increase in speed if you go with the X6800 over the Quad. Just doesn't make sense.

Finances have improved and continue to do so.

I recently got a raise at work and all of our debt is finally paid off.

I will be back to PC Gaming soon I'm sure.
