Default VSYNC Problems 9xxx drivers (Framelock trouble)

Hi

What is going on with VSYNC? It does not appear to work properly anymore - at least for the last few drivers.

Things are particularly bad when g-sync framelock is used.

Setting SyncToVBlank via nvidia-settings (either gui or commandline) has no effect at all on OpenGL programs. Only setting the environment variable __GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK seems to work.

When framelock is enabled *sometimes* the framerate is limited to 30fps (monitor is 60Hz) and other times it is fine - we can't figure this one out.

I have attached a nvidia-bug log file and another text file showing the output of various runs of both glxgears and the nvidia swap_group_demo program

HELP! Any comments are welcome!

Some more info...

We discovered a couple of things.

1. If we boot up and immediately run swap_group_demo -b -g we are limited to 30fps. If we then simply run and quit nvidia-settings and then run swap_group_demo -b -g again it runs at 60fps

2. In a G-Sync setup only the server node behaves as above - the slaves always run at 30fps - as reported by swap_group_demo - even if nvidia-settings is run. We have no idea why running nvidia-settings has any effect at all - but it does.

3. Settings SyncToVBlank in nvidia-settings by any means has no effect.

We started looking into this because we have several applications that *do not* use the swap barrier extension as it and libraries like Performer do not work well together (ok, they do not work at all!). Anyway, we have been noticing image tearing on the slave framelock nodes for the last several weeks.

Currently we have a problem with downgrading since the current drivers resolved some other issues we were having so we are kinda stuck.

Sync to VBlank is working fine for me in 1.0-9746 (including with the nvidia-settings command line that you used).

The fact that you can enforce sync to vblank as a variable on the same command with glxgears, leads me to believe that something else is overriding it. Have you verified that you don't have any environment variables set somewhere that are potentially overriding things? What is the output from running 'env' ?

Thanks,
Lonni

You are so correct!

I also tried another machine (that has a G-Sync card) and that worked too. Turns out that the machines in question are using the livna rpms and they set a bunch of environment variables upon login (naughty) including __GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK=0, which of course is overriding whatever nvidia-settings is set to I suppose, which makes sense.

I suppose that this is possibly causing my weird framelock problem as well? I will have to try it out.

OK, the environment variable *does not* have any impact on my larger problem.

The framelock still only shows 30fps. No matter what the VSYNC settings are. I also get tearing on the slaves where we do our own barrier right before the swap with VSYNC on - this was working earlier.

What could be going on here?

I am running swap_group_demo -b -g on two slaves and then on the master

There are three machines here. The master has two FX4500's, only one of which is configured for a single display. The slaves each have a single FX4500.

Please run nvidia-settings (the GUI) and post a screenshot of the framelock screen from the framelock server, and also from one of the clients.

Thanks,
Lonni

OK, here you go

http://www.ust.ucla.edu/~friedman/pub/nvidia

There is a screen shot of each of the server (center) and the two slaves (right and left). There is also a corresponding nvidia-bug-report from each machine.

There is also a screen shot of swap_group_demo running at 30fps.

Normally, we setup the framelock from the center machine via a script that calls nvidia-settings -a ... a bunch of times to get everything going. This time I used the gui but the result was the same.

Nothing obviously wrong is jumping out at me. If you run swap_group_demo on just the master (without the other two systems connected/framelocked to the master), do you still see 30FPS?

Also, can you post the output from env from each of the 3 systems?

Thanks,
Lonni

Look here

http://www.ust.ucla.edu/~friedman/pub/nvidia2

There are three .env files dumped from just after login and before I did anything.

These images are without framelock. All are run with -g -b

center-sgd-30.png
left-sgd-30.png
right-sgd-30.png

These images are with framelock. All are run with -g -b

center-sgd-30-fl.png
left-sgd-30-fl.png
right-sgd-30-fl.png

Then for good measure...

Running without any paramters give around 200fps (framelock is on)

center-sgd-fl.png

Running again without parameters but forcing VSYNC (framelock is on)

center-sgd-fl-v.png

Runnin with -g only (framelock is on)

center-sgd-fl-g.png

The results are similar for the left and right.

According to your screenshots, you still have the two other systems connected and framelocked. I'd like you to test as if the left & right systems do not exist (and are not framelocked or connected to the center system).

thanks,
Lonni

I did, look at center-sgd-30.png

That is from before the framelock was turned on.

----

Unless you mean you want the physical g-sync cables disconnected as well.

Yes, I wanted the physical cabling between the 3 systems disconnected. Which of the screenshots which include the nvidia-settings framelock window corresponds with center-sgd-30.png ?
