Hey... I know this is slightly O/T, but I figured I'd probably get an answer quickest here-

Technologically, what is the difference between BD and HD-DVD? In other words, if I were to own IronMan in both formats... would I notice any difference between the two in image and sound quality?

I ask cause I purchased a BD/HD-DVD drive last Friday... so I'm just curious what to expect.

really depends per movie.

in begining when movies where released on both formats, BD was encoded in MPEG2 and HD-DVD was in VC1.

VC1 encoded movies usually look better, can be seen in reviews on high-def digest website.

both formats support the same Audio and Video formats, visual and sound quality really depends what the studio decides to use, and how well was it created.

Initial difference in movies released on both formats didn't really had anything to do which format was better, it was caused sony lack of providing necessary tools.

So in other words it'll be a mixed bag of results.

Both formats hold the capacity to be comparable in visual and sound quality, but due to "business" they might not be.

HD-DVD had one advantage, it was finalized from the start, final specs everything was set and ready for release.

BD was released in state that it took them few months to provide all necessary tools, and final specs maybe a year + after release.

Hmm...

So I suppose I'll just ask you guys as to which format to purchase if I ever want to buy a movie available in both formats then.

Otherwise it seems this could get really confusing.

HD-DVD is dead, so stick to BD, unless you really want to save some cash.

After they run out of current HD-DVD or Combo players there will be no more created, so why stick to dying format.

unless you might want a nice change/adventure of converting HD-DVD to Blu-ray, can be done.

Well, I remember reading that since HD-DVD died, the discs are now dirt cheap. I assumed that I wouldn't notice a difference ,visually or audibly, between the two formats. So I was hoping to be able to just get a bunch of HD-DVDs untill they completely disappeared. At which point I'd get only BD... assuming that by that time they'd come down in price significantly.

Well, that was my hope at least.

if you are ok with the idea that one day you won't be able to playback those HD-DVD, then go ahead and buy them, save quite a bit of cash.

remember you can always convert those HD-DVD to BD, you would loose the fancy menus, and extra, but movie video and sound will be intact.
