But 90% of the HDTVs in people's homes are not 1080p. Most of the HDTVs sold are going to be the cheapo sub-$1000 value brand ones, most of which are 720p right now. A solution such as a half-way working hardware scaler like the PS3's seems to be isn't going to get as much use as it should be simply because of that fact (not to mention most 1080p TVs handle a 720p signal just fine). Huh?

So all the hoopla over PS3 downscaling 720p games to 480p on 1080i sets was non existent? That's what this fixes. Those users will not have to be forced into standard def and will get a scaled 1080 image whether it is 1080i or 1080p doesn't matter.

I never said more 1080p tvs are in more homes than other TV's, I'm saying 1080p TV's are becoming more abundant and much cheaper.

If this scaler fixes the issue w/ 480i/1080i CRT TV's, then 1080p upscaling comes with the territory, so 1080p TV's also benefit.

Yes, that's what I meant by the "720p-to-480p issue", since 720p games will fall back to 480p if your TV doesn't accept 720p. And that's why I said the purpose of this would be to get bypass that issue.

I had said in my post earlier that the upscaler would mainly be for fixing the issue of 720p games running at 480p in 1080i HDTVs. Your reply to it made it sound like I didn't think that or something, so I was a little confused at what you were saying.

Right now it seems like they're trying to push that everyone should have a 1080p TV anyway and they aren't spending as much time supporting other formats. If you have a 1080p TV, you can display 720p or 1080i/p without a problem, so they aren't in the group of people that currently have issues with the PS3 output settings.

Strangely enough, Blu-Ray movies can only be output at 1080i or 1080p, and if your TV doesn't support either of those then it scales it back all the way to 480p. However, 720p games will be scaled back to 480p if your TV only supports 1080i. So basically you're expected to have a TV that supports BOTH 720p and 1080i/p for game and movie viewing, and if it only supports one or the other then either your games or Blu-ray movies will be played at 480p.

So basically programmers will have to code their games to run at 960x1080 or any other non square pixels resolution in order to take advantage of the horizontal scaler and allow non standard resolutions (or compatibility with old displays) without impacting too much the fillrate ?

Will it still be marketed as 1080 i/p ? That whould be a stretch of the truth (pun intended )
