So all the hoopla over PS3 downscaling 720p games to 480p on 1080i sets was non existent? That's what this fixes. Those users will not have to be forced into standard def and will get a scaled 1080 image whether it is 1080i or 1080p doesn't matter.

If this scaler fixes the issue w/ 480i/1080i CRT TV's, then 1080p upscaling comes with the territory, so 1080p TV's also benefit.

So we're on the same page then? Or did I say/imply something different before?

I still find it odd that Sony is really treating the PS3 like a PC and forcing the developers to anticipate every resolution and do it themselves.

Strangely enough, Blu-Ray movies can only be output at 1080i or 1080p, and if your TV doesn't support either of those then it scales it back all the way to 480p. However, 720p games will be scaled back to 480p if your TV only supports 1080i. So basically you're expected to have a TV that supports BOTH 720p and 1080i/p for game and movie viewing, and if it only supports one or the other then either your games or Blu-ray movies will be played at 480p. |

So basically programmers will have to code their games to run at 960x1080 or any other non square pixels resolution in order to take advantage of the horizontal scaler and allow non standard resolutions (or compatibility with old displays) without impacting too much the fillrate ?
Will it still be marketed as 1080 i/p ? That whould be a stretch of the truth (pun intended )
