Hathor Zhi just runs like crap. There's no way around it. In that room where the three stone statues are holding the ring of fire up to the star ceiling I get around 10-15fps and it's choppy as hell. I submitted a detailed bug report to their team about this, although I'm sure by now they've probably heard it hundreds of times. But everyone please submit a bug report to them with your system specs.. it can only help.

Although the entire game performs way under par for the graphical detail it has, the biggest performance drops always seem to happen around other online characters. Get 10 of them in a room at once and you can forget it.

Mal--I was mainly wanting to move to Vista in order to avoid the red screens I get whenever walking around inside the towers. That is dreadfully annoying because it significantly impacts the visuals of the game. It's terrible.

Aside from all of these glitches, the game is awesome. I just hope they put the time into fixing all these problems.

I've been testing it extensively and I only get the slow downs and lag when it it thrashing my hard drive in cities like Hathor Zhi @ highest quality. Next week I am going to get two more sticks of matching Mushkin to up my system ram to 4gb.

If it still accesses my hard disk at the same rate I am going to be POed.

Does vsync work for you in Vanguard, Xion? It only works for me when I run in a window, even if I set "force on" in the CP.

I can run it highest quality 1680x with 16xAF maxed grass etc, I only suffer in cities like Hathor Zhi or Khal with lots of people about. The bottom line is hard disk access is killing my performance in cities for whatever the reason.

Vsync works just fine for me, Mal. I just have to enable it in the control panel. It's definitely working, because I turned it off once and along with the screen tearing a little I was getting more stuttering than usual.

I think I've heard a few complain about vsync problems in Vista.

What server are you playing on?

Hmm odd.

I am playing on Tharridon and Florendyl.

I installed Vista again because I have never tried my hard disks in RAID. I set them up to see if it would help Vanguard, and it didn't. It made other things hella fast though. My windows disk score went from 5.7 to 5.9.

Ah ha!

Vista was not disabling Aeroglass when I was running Vanguard. Try setting you appearance to "best performance" so it switches it off then run the game. Helps a lot with Hathor Zhi.

I thought AeroGlass was supposed to have no impact on performance? Firingsquad did a piece on it where they benchmarked and saw no difference.

Last I heard Xion,

The reason it doesn't have a performance hit was they changed it so Vista would disable it when you ran some applications. You can watch this happen with media player classic or other windowed apps.

I'd say try it before gaming for the heck of it, and if it doesn't make a difference with Vanguard's performance, skip it. I didn't notice much of a difference outdoors and Hathor Zhi did seem smoother with it off.

Later I'll try it a few more times back and forth off and on to make sure.

Hathor Zhi @ Highest Quality with 16 x AF @ 1680x in the large main room with many players was dropping my FPS to the mid 20s when I would look across it. Now I am averaging in the mid 30s doing the same.

Go down into the crafting room when it is full of players and stand in a rear corner to look across it towards the door if you want another decent test.

I'm actually running it on XP now. I don't like that Vista's having problems vsync'ng, and I'll be dual-booting for a while until it's more stable. I just wish I didn't have that red-screen problem when I walk inside the castles.

[Edit: Also waiting on SLI drivers for Vista]

If I was using SLi I would not be on Vista; it works half the time and often poorly in that case. Keep dual booting or stay on XP. IMO MCE 2005 is very close in feel to Vista in many ways.

The thing I like best about the 8800GTX actually is it completely freed me from dual card|gpu needs @ 1680x or 1600x with filtering active. Of course I also love that nVidia returned to their tradition of HQ AF.

I am hoping single card performance will be closer to XP levels soon. D3D isn't too bad and OGL is lagging. SLi will likely take a good deal more time. We will see.

Is there even a driver for SLI in Vista yet? I didn't think there was.

Yeah. You don't really need it at that res right now, except for a select few games. Oblivion, for one, I can tell a noticeable difference with (From ~35-40fps in forests --> 80) but that's only if you're picky about performance--which I am. Most people can't tell a difference between 40-->60fps, but I can and it drives me nuts.

I'm fixing to find out something, though. I had a huge boost in performance last night while playing Vanguard after overclocking my processor from 2.4gHz--> 3.6gHz. I was getting ~30fps more on average than I was w/ it stock. But I also changed my SLI rendering settings at the same time to force SFR, so I'm not entirely sure which is to credit for the performance increase. I'm off to do some benches right now.

Look here at this new review for the 320mb 8800GTS:

http://www.hothardware.com/viewartic...leid=930&cid=2

Techreport's numbers show the same thing:

http://techreport.com/reviews/2007q1...b/index.x?pg=5

The 8800GTX doesn't really get smacked down until 2560x with filtering. I shouldn't need to upgrade this card using a lowly 1680x monitor for quite a while.

Under MCE 2005 I was seeing 45-60FPS in dense grass in Oblivion running HDR 4 x AA and 16 x AF. I haven't installed and tested it yet for Vista. I was using CaptNKill's distant LOD pak and a custom config file. I use to hate those areas with older graphics cards.

The cities were another place for slow downs in the past and my OCed C2D took care of that. 52 FPS for a low with max viewing distances in Bravil and 89 FPS at the same area if I use them at 60% towards the right. I am talking about actor, object, grass, tree etc.

Check the driver section of the forums. I believe a beta driver was indeed released for SLi. It did have crappy performance though.
