I don't know. I can't really say for sure since I can't easily revert back to the originals. This game is so hit or miss performance-wise that it can be really hard to tell when something really is slowing the game down more than normal.

Definitely felt slower after installing these though. Especially in the imperial city, which is strange since thats usually CPU limited... could have just been because of all of the people walking around though.

... damn I need a core 2.

BTW, I play at 1600x1200 with 16xAF and no AA and it really isnt "smooth" most of the time anyway. Almost a year later this game is still kicking our computers' asses. Of course so does Morrowind...

Hopefully they use a different game engine next time.

Go to the console, and do "SetDebugText 13" and "tdt". If your texture memory usage is way more than what your GPU has it, its going to be paging in the textures from system memory or the page file, which will kill your performance. This game needs DX10 VRAM virtualization badly.

Also, based on comments I've seen on Oblivion modding forms, from people who have supposedly been in contact with Bethseda, a lot of short cuts were taken when they wrote the engine, and they give up a lot to support the 360 (where memory and HD space are limited). I'm hoping TES V borrows a lot of technology from UE3, Crysis, Alan Wake and other games with very complex environments and seamless worlds, because Oblivion is far from a good implementation (just like Morrowind). Bethseda can make a great world, but the under the hood stuff needs a ton of work.

You know... I've never seen a video card urinate on itself before but my 6800 just did.

I agree completely. I think they did the best they could with the resources (engine, platforms and time) given to them, but Morrowind and Oblivion are far from the best that they could have been if another engine had been used.

Really, I mean there is no reason that Morrowind should STILL run like complete ass on my system in some places. In fact, in dense areas with a lot of people and buildings, Morrowind and Oblivion run almost the same.

I have my doubts that systems 5 years from now will run these two games much better than current hardware. I think its mostly due to CPU limitations though, so maybe the next wave of Core 2s or AMD's future line up will help.

I have my doubts as well, especially after looking in the INI. There are settings related to loading that are millisecond timers - you can double the CPU speed, double the amount of RAM and its bandwidth, and quadruple the HD bandwidth, and it will still run like it does now. And given how Morrowind runs, I wonder how much of the engine for both games depends on millisecond timers. Its almost like the programming staff bit off more than they can chew (kinda like Obsidian with NWN2, but at least Obsidian has made some drastic performance improvements).

I don't know if the problem is with the Gamebryo engine (and I've never had a Gamebryo based title run all that great) or with the code Bethseda added and modified.

Eh, I think it has potential to run much faster on tomorrow's technology. I mean... just look at how much faster it runs on a single 7XXX card vs a single 8800 all other variables being equal.

Yeah but the cities still run the same for the most part. And the game still chugs (at least for me) when fighting a few people, especially in the cities. And when I walk around I get a lot of stuttering while the game loads content. I think the loading is partially from the mods I'm using, but vanilla oblivion still does this.

I still want as much GPU power as possible to ensure the other areas run their best, but if Morrowind is any indication of how the game scales with CPUs, it'll help a lot up to a certain point where it hits a wall and the game still just runs like crap.

why does it say you need the oblivion mod manager?

i just extracted the files and started up the game and it worked fine.

btw runs great at 1680x1024 with 2 gigs of ram on a 8800 gtx 8xaf and 4xaa. the only thing it did for me was increase my hdd loads by about half a second more.

Because you need it to update the archive invalidation. Some of the textures were made before the 1.1 patch, so if you've applied the patch, you'll get the stock textures instead.

your right.

i did the install steps and now notice that the blood decals look alot better than they did before i updated the archive inalidation

even with lod and distance mods already installed iam running really good with this. it gives me some 3-4 second load pauses when out in the field from time to time, but otherwise it's great.

i love the ground textures!

It's always awesome whenever people who have a love for a game share their effort with the rest of us.

Anyway, this sucker along with other lod mods and the Natural Environments mod use up about 752MB (according to VidMemTester) of my 8800GTX's video memory at 1920x1440.

WOW i guess its eating all your VRAM then!
i play @1600x1200 so it'll probably be less than that for me.
