I don't know if u can get even better sound when changing the settings

Cause I guess the defaults from CL are the safe settings (not for HL2), but I guess u can even get more out of ur board

now that new 1.3 version(wrapper version 0.9.0.0) has been released, its a good time for update.

FEAR: EAX, hardware acceleration fully restored, improvement in FPS
updated: raise the buffers to 16, for better FPS

FEAR XP: EAX, hardware acceleration fully restored, improvement in FPS
updated: raise the buffers to 16, for better FPS

GT Legends: fully restored
updated: raise the buffers to 16, can hear more sounds during a race

GTR2: fully restored
updated: raise the buffers to 16, can hear more sounds during a race

Infernal: alchemy causes the game to crash

Neverwinter Nights 2: old wrapper 0.8.3.0 caused BSOD for me, new wrapper 0.9.0.0 works, fully restored, buffers at 16 and latency at 15 helps FPS.

Titan Quest: fully restored

Titan Quest Expansion: fully restored

Rainbow Six Las Vegas: fully restored, increase in FPS
updated: set buffers to 16

Splinter Cell Chaos Theory: fully restored

Splinter Cell Double Agent: effects fully restored, side effect, causes characters to stutter saying the first 1-2 words in each conversation

Battlefield 2: native OpenAL

Call of Duty 2(updated 2-3-07): fully restored

Crashday: full restored

Oblivion: works now with 0.9.0.0, increase in FPS

Sid Meier Pirates!: fully restored

Test Drive Unlimited: causes game to crash, but before it crashes does raise FPS, maybe will work better with next version of wrapper

STALKER: native OpenAL, no alchemy required

Supreme Commander: fully restored

Command & Conquer 3: fully restored, raise FPS

I have an auzentech card.

If I run stereo only do I even need to worry about this whole openal "issue"?

i personally noticed FPS increases in few games.

if you are ok, with loosing hardware acceleration EAX options, its your decision in the end.

i know that c-media is working on openal driver, but by speaking to auzentech they have no plans on creating a wrapper to translate directsound calls to openal.

The whole reason for removing directsound HAL support was to eliminate BSOD's (read: directsound is still there unlike what many claim, they claim this because they really have no idea what is going on here; directsound is still there, just the hardware abstraction is gone.)

But creative, who prefers hardware and software that is unstable by design, doesn't like the idea of no more BSOD's, so they sought to create a means of working around this stability layer, all in the name of a 1%-2% frame rate increase. Thus creative alchemy was born.

I like my EAX, enviromental sound effects. And many more millions of people also like their EAX. If you don't, good for you, no one is forcing you to use it.

I can hear the difference between a game that has EAX effects and game that does not.

Once people stop playing games that use directsound with eax, and more and more games use openal (or what ever will replace it, alchemy will be not needed). But during this transition when probably over 90% games use directsound my ears will be happy to hear everything.

When I moved from xp to vista for the first 2 weeks I was using vista with onboard sound. All the games sounded different, more quite and lifeless.

Btw, I only had BSOD with alchemy during the first initial alpha version that was released. Never had BSOD with alchemy 1.3. Had the final version for 1 day now, and also no BSOD.

I am not judging whether or not EAX is good or bad here. What I am saying is that it doesn't need to be done in hardware, in fact, it is rather counterproductive. Hell, we have dual core CPU's these days, and they can do the job a lot more efficiently than limited instruction set secondary audio hardware can, with lower latency as well. Hell, you could add a lot more of those reverb effects simultaneously in software than you can with any creative card, and notice no framerate decrease if the game was written properly. IIRC this is the route that epic is taking in the future (or maybe that was crytech, I don't remember.)

that was crytek approach, if it works, good

currently i have over 30 games installed that use the old directsound approach. and probably over 20 of them will stay on my hdd for quite a long time. untill i stop playing those games, i will continue to use alchemy with x-fi.

if auzentech x-fi prelude supports alchemy as well, i will probably buy prelude.

games that were made with DS3D in mind, really sound different in vista when run on the new directsound software mode.
