okay, so basically i'm looking into getting a delphi coding book and the ones i'm just wondering which would be the best available book for me.
i saw Delphi in a Nutshell, i love the O'Reily books, my only issue is that it is from 2000, and i am looking for a slightly more recent version. why delphi.... don't ask, it's what the company wants me to learn.

I don't think it matters if the book is from 2000 or not as far as I know Delphi is pretty dead. (No new development on the language itself), hell the creator of Delphi went and created C#.

i knew that, but i thought borland had taken over delphi? i could be wrong. i know delphi 7 is as of 2005, although it is possible that it has been completely stopped as well. i'll have to look into it a little more

In fact, Delphi 2007 is already released with full Vista support
Delphi isn't dead, its running and living. A lot of programs are still coded with Delphi today.I code my own programs using Delphi 2007 now, just great suite. And to be a bit ontopic, I don't suggest reading books, by the time you bought them, they are already outdated. If you have zero experience do some tutorials on the web, if you have more experience just try to find a nice project you want to make, the Delphi helpfile is rather good, you can find a lot in it, not to forget how many forums there are if you run stuck on something.

The problem I find with tutorials on the web is they're all over the place in terms of structure and style; plus I find it easier to use a hardcopy reference than staring at the screen.
Getting a book depends on which version of Delphi you are going to work with and your level of comfort with the language itself. My favorite book would be Mastering Borland Delphi 2005 by Cantu' ISBN 07-8214-342-3 (updated to 2006 at http://www.marcocantu.com/md2005/Upd...phi2006.html); if you also need to learn .NET, .NET 2.0 for Delphi Programmers by Shemitz ISBN 15-9059-386-3 is serviceable. Inside Delphi 2006 by Hladni seems to be the only Delphi 2006 book of note, but I never got into the language to enjoy reading another Delphi book. (Turbo Delphi is based on Delphi in BDS 2006). |
