nvidia-settings thermal monitor reports 44C TOPS after a lot of beryl intensive stuff ... what i think normal since the weather in my city is about 33C

GRUB doesn't work in all setups where LILO works and vice versa. As you should know. For example GRUB has big problems with BIOS raids. And LILO supports RAID-1 better. So some people use LILO.

and who told you that this thermal monitor is correct? And what about other components? Like CPU, memory (yes, even ram can get too warm), or the power brick?

"make all modules_install install

is all that is needed.

Since ubuntu is a debian clone, the kernel-install script should be identical to the one in gentoo.. and make install copies around everything to /boot and creates symlinks. So no need to do anything.

Btw, which f*ing distro is using lilo? That is just sick."

Umm you'll find you can build and install a kernel on any Linux distribution. Relying on a particular distribution's scripts may be easy for a windose graduate but does not help your general Linux skills.

A lot of us like lilo and grub is just another way to deal with the MBR. I'm not sure you know enough to have a useful opinion in this case.

so you don't use packet managers, because you are relying on distro scripts?

I am using linux for a long time now. I know how to build kernels. I have started with 2.2.10 and build a LOT of them. I installed them in any way, with make install, copying around etc pp.

And if a 'distro specific' script (which is not very 'distro specific' if almost all distros use it), does a good job, it is just stupid NOT to use it.

You do not seem to know anything, because 'make all' works EVERYWHERE. Yes sir! I knew that. Oh horror!
Only the 'make install' (shortened to make all install), is dependent on a script - and that script is extremly common.

About grub and lilo. I know enough of both of them - as I said, I am using linux for some time. I have lived through the horrors of 'lilo without an alternative', and I partied, when grub came around. Because lilo freaking sucks.

"so you don't use packet managers, because you are relying on distro scripts?"

You'll find a README in the root of the kernel source tree. No need for distro anything. I prefer to do it by hand as I have very few problems that way, for instance I have not had problems with LILO in a very long time. I imagine Slamd64 a 64 bit Slackware has install scripts but I'm so dumb I know nothing about them.

There was a time I had a P-Pro and to set it's memory for fast reads and writes you had to boot DOS. I used to do an NT boot manager that gave you many choices one of which booted DOS and then LoadLin booted Linux. Kinda cool but the LILO boot manager kicked it's (the NT manager's) ass when I figured it out.

It's all in the mind son

I don't know if that temperature theory holds up. I can leave an openGL screensaver going and it wont lock up, but beryl (or any composite manager) locks hard.

Hm.... I noticed my system has begun to hang randomly. It will hang for ~30 seconds and then it reboots X or sometimes it will never recover.

What's causing this issue to come up all of the sudden? IIRC it only happens when I have an OpenGL application running. It also doesn't happen frequently - I can run an OpenGL app for hours without a problem.

Rolling your own kernel in Ubuntu is pretty easy actually. Here is a good guide:
