Now I'm happy playing HL and HL2 without any Xid issues

O RLY?

This is an interesting development. Very interesting. I almost want to try it too.

Unhappy Re: NVRM Xid: WHY ISNT THIS FIXED?!?!?!

Hello there
Finally I got the spirit to search for a solution to my problem.

I have been having these X locks from time to time.
Every once or twice a month.
I have the computer always on.

The locks appear to be of random nature.
But apparently it crashes more often when I'm seeing flash sites go figure.
(I use firefox with the latest flash plugin)
Apart from that it works ok.

I have HW accel off. Because when I turn it on my chances of getting a lockup will increase from 1 or 2/month to 2/week

I only found this site because yesterday I got (for the first time) the "NVRM Xid:13" msg in the messages log.
Before that I only guessed that it was something related with the video board.

Sometimes when the X locks, if I have music (mp3/ogg) playing in the background it keeps playing until the track ends (really weird) then it just stops...

I haven't tried to login remotely because I don't have another computer available.
But from what I see in my logs the net traffic just stops when the X locks...

As for the kernel sources being the so longed solution, hummm I hope so.
But I can't say that until I have my pc running for more than a month without locking.

That's because I have this problem for quite a while.
It's been more than a couple of years since I remember it.
All that time my pc has always been on. When it locks I just reboot.

I've tried several kernels and drivers. Now I'm using the only drivers available
x11-drivers/nvidia-legacy-drivers-1.0.7184
Anyway that never did anything...

So, it's difficult to believe that it would go away just like that. Though I would like it to be so

I have a Asus GeForce v6800 deluxe 256 32MG DDR with a PIII 800 coppermine @ Asus CUV4X with a 512MB pc133 sdram diim.
I'm using Gentoo with gentoo-sources kernel 2.6.18-r3.

If you guys have any luck solving your problems with this new kernel, maybe it will solve mine too.
I'll stick around to see.

Maybe it's just a problem with the card... It's getting kind of old..
Or maybe it's a problem with overheating... I never over clocked it though, but maybe it will become more stable if I lower the clock speed.
I do clean and oil the fan every once in a while when it starts to do strange noises.

Or maybe it's a problem with some software. (hope so - it's easy to solve)

I'll be buying a new laptop soon and I would not like to see this happen again... (just like a nightmare that never ends)

@roshi

do sysrq-keys still work, when X locks up?

Well apparently the keyboard dies with X. No ctrl+alt+F1
Don't remember if the SysRq/PrintScreen works.
Don't remember trying it.
I'll try it as soon as this thing locks up again
Because it will for sure...
It would be nice it it was possible to turn on some kind of debug info here.
Don't know if turning on debug messages at kernel level will help here.
Does anyone knows if it is possible to turn on some extra logging for the nvidia driver? (Nvidia guys?)

(I hope some day I'll be able to put on a smiling face here )

The most useful thing you could do is setup a serial console to capture any kernel messages associated with the crash.

crtl-alt-F1 not working doesn't mean anything. If you can't use the serial console, R+K might be your best chance to a) get keyboard back from X and b) be able to switch to a virtual terminal to capture some output (where the rest of the sysrq-keys become really handy).

Other than the logged in the var/log/messages?
You're telling me that the best solution would be to try to get another device and telnet/ssh/serial to the pc to check if it's even alive...

I had a few pc's a while ago. Some 486. They would do the trick. But I threw them away. I needed the space...
When it happens again I'll try to get a laptop from someone I know.
Then I'll be giving news.

Apart from that, you guys trying out the new kernel let me know about your experiences. Do you guys keep the pc always on?

Thanks

A serial console has no relationship to ssh or telnet. However, it would certainly be useful to know whether you can ssh into the system and generate a bug report while X is hung. Barring that, setting up a serial console would be useful to get a better idea of what is happening when the system hangs.

Well I sure would like to try that.
Though my desktop has a serial port, I don't think that I can get another pc with one... The closest thing I can get is a laptop with Ethernet.

I do have a programmable micro controller and some dot matrix displays here. with some switches I can build/program a simple pc interface... I'll be on vacations the rest of the month... maybe I'll try that... just for fun.
I do have a "rs232 to usb" chip here, but that would probably be far more complex to build... or maybe not...
