Default Re: NVRM Xid: WHY ISNT THIS FIXED?!?!?!

This is a shame since i bought my notebook with nvidia `cause i thought thay had a good linux support. Apparently our linux locking all the time with xid errors is not reason enough to they take a look on the bug.

Default Re: NVRM Xid: WHY ISNT THIS FIXED?!?!?!

I experience as well this XID problem, look at the log for details (for the readers: MSI-K7D Master-L, 2xAthlon MP2400+, MSI GeForce 6800GT AGP, TFT Sony SDM-M81 TFT connected with DVI cable, SuSE 10.0, 450W power supply, all recent drivers up to 9755). The following happens usually:
-Up to a few minutes after logging in after a cold start the screen flickers. What I do with the system seems to be irrelevant, it happens if the system is idle, if I watch TV, or if I run OpenGL applications, it does simply not matter.
-Sometimes the display is parially garbled after the flickering. The system freezes sometimes immediately, somtimes I am able to review "dmesg" and to shut down the system. Anyway, if I take me too much time, the system freezes.
-If I am able to do a clean "shutdown -r now" without freeze and the system "warm" reboots, the XID thing is not happening again here.
-On the next cold boot (after a shutdown -h) it happens again.

Maybe remarkable: The trouble started in November 2005 when I exchanged my MSI GeForce 5900 Ultra with the 6800GT, but I noticed the XID entries the first time in September 2006. Before the system just freezed without log file entries, so I did not file a report.

Unhappy Re: NVRM Xid: WHY ISNT THIS FIXED?!?!?!

I'm sorry to say that I just had a Xid issue with Linux-2.6.20-rc2 while I was playing around with resolution settings while using Beryl.

My kernel log says:

Mar 17 06:32:27 dragon23dragon kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 13, 0004 00000000 00005097 00000f24 399740bc 00000040

Mar 17 06:33:54 dragon23dragon kernel: klogd
I just had to soft reset here.

Soft reset from here too.

Speaking as someone who has gone through all the terrors of trying to figure out why this bug occurs, the only advice I can offer is to never stop looking for answers. It seems that the bug isn't specific to any one set of variables of circumstances, infact it seems that it can be triggered by any random unfortunate configuration of hardware / software.

On my nvidia geforce go 7400 the problem was simply upgrading the BIOS, on my desktop computer I had to buy a new video card entirely. It is likely the solution to your problem is lurking out there somewhere in the ether of cyberspace, keep googling and keep asking questions and trying different things.

That's all the encouragement I can offer.

I can verify that the system is alive after the freeze. In /var/log/syslog I see

Apr 10 15:35:37 daneel kernel: [12520.024000] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0000 0374 00000000 0000d25c 00000000 00000001
Apr 10 15:35:37 daneel kernel: [12520.040000] NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 30, L1 -> L0
Apr 10 15:36:41 daneel gnome-power-manager: (mini) GNOME interaktiv utloggning därför strömknappen har använts

That last message is a result of me pressing the power button and g-p-m catching that. So, only the display is frozen, I can move the mouse and music plays in the background.

Ubuntu feisty, 1.0-9755, ubuntu kernel 2.6.20-14-generic and Beryl. Only happens with Beryl.

And, important point - NO other kernel error messages visible in any of the log files.

This is the solution for this annoying freezes

echo "options nvidia NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222" NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia

after that restart your system.

Use NVref_Mobile if you are using a NVIDIA for laptop.

This doesn't solve the problem. I have a GeForce 6200,1.0-9755 drivers and 2.6.20.4 vanilla kernel. If i load the nvidia module with this options, my computer reboots atomatically when I exec an OpenGl game.

I bought an nvidia becaous i tought i would have a good support in linux. However, i find with losts of troubles and new drivers between long periods of time (ATI releases a new driver every month with fixes). I hope nvidia to solve this problem soon or maybe my next card will be an Intel card (less performance but free drivers).

freeDrivers,
From what you're stating, you're seeing behavior which is completely different from the topic of this thread. I'd suggest following the instructions here:
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=58498

and starting a new thread if you'd like further assistance.

Thanks,
Lonni

Default Re: NVRM Xid: WHY ISNT THIS FIXED?!?!?!

I have actually fixed my crashes, the system runs now stable for two weeks (look at my report above to review the description of my problem). When disassembling my PC two weeks ago I discovered that the heatsink air inlet (the memory side, memory of the graphics card) was blocked by dust. I cleaned it up carefully, and now the system runs stable. The sneaky part was that the temperature reported by nvidia-settings was just below 80 degrees (which is no reason to worry if the limit is 120). So I guess the temperature sensor is located near the graphics card fan and was happy, while the graphics card memory was overheating...

My behavour is exactly the same. My system only reboots if I load the module with 'NVreg_RegistryDwords="PerfLevelSrc=0x2222" NVreg_SoftEDIDs=0 NVreg_Mobile=1' options. Otherwise I get:
Apr 28 14:07:05 d3b kernel: NVRM: Xid (0001:00): 6, PE0000 1f08 3ee240c4 0000000

0 f000011f 00000000

until the X freezes and I have to reboot. I also tryed the new beta driver and it's still the same !!! How much i'll have to wait for a fix ??

No answers from nVidia ??? What a shame !! So nvidia is the gaming leader but your system reboots or hangs if you use it. I spent my money in a nvidia graphic card and ... Oh crap! nvidia has a bug since few months away and they dont care anyway ! what a shame !!
