Default id announces Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars for PS3, Xbox 360

Quote:
The war between the GDF and Strogg will soon be igniting on next-generation consoles as id Software and Activision, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI) today confirmed that Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars™, the team-based first person action title, and already one of the most anticipated new properties of 2007 is coming to next-gen platforms. In this epic multiplayer-focused game, players can choose to defend humanity as a part of the Global Defense Force (GDF) or destroy it as a merciless Strogg alien invader. Under the executive production of id Software, Nerve Software is developing Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, while Z-Axis is the developer for the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system.

“We're pleased to be working with Nerve and Z-Axis to bring the highly-anticipated gameplay from Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars to the Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3 system,” said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software.

Great! Slowly but surely making me regret buying a console less. Although based on the videos of Quake 4 I've seen on the X360... I'm a tad worried too

Any idea on the release date for these besides "when it's ready"?

K

EDIT: It looks like Nerve has only done Id games (such as Doom classic for Xbox Live Arcade and Doom 3 ROE) and was founded by an ex-Id employee. Z-Axis looks like they've primarily dabbled in sports games like BMX? Anyone played any of Z-Axis games before to know how they usually play?

I can hear the ship date slipping already.

Let's just hope they don't push for a simultaneous release (which they probably will to maximize their marketing effort) which will adds months and months of porting time to development. Though if they're getting a third party to do the port maybe we'll see Q4:ET on PC b/f the consoles.

Here's hoping

I wonder how close the versions will be considering they're being done by 3 different companies.

The only thing we know so far is that the console versions will have 16 players on MP max, and PC version 24 IIRC.

"On others news CRYTEK announces CRysis for the XBox360 and PS3... "

That is my prediction .. I have no doubts that we will see ports of that game for next generation consoles too.. (even if they denied any rumors about this) and that some third party developer began the development in secrecy for consoles too. FAct is that any console from MS or SOny alone can reach a wider gaming community than PC's will ever dream to have and doesnt have its piracy problems on top (not at the same level). So no matter how much they love or hate the consoles ,its common sense for TOp developers to look for 2x-3x times or more cash by reusing their existing graphics game data. All the Vista and DX10 hype is beyond the reality of what is also possible with "less technology" available in next generation consoles.

From reading JC's comments on his development with the 360 and ps3, they develop first for the 360 and then port that to the ps3. Simply because the development tools are better on the 360. Besides the development tools, the only other big problem with the PS3 is that it has less ram than the 360, so some things get tight.

The PS3 has the same amount of RAM then the X360 does. It has been stated many times that while the PS3 has its RAM dedicated by default the GPU can tap into the system RAM when coded to...

If anything the game might run better on the PS3 thanks to it being an Nvidia GPU... we all know how great Quake4/DOOM3s engine ran on ATI hardware... and the X360.

My mistake on that one, IGN wrote a interview with the people who did Oblivion and completely munged the facts which they have changed in later articles.

If I recall , aint this the case....

"PS3 with it's 24 pixel shaders, 8 vertex shaders. The 360 has 48 unified shaders"

Think that might make the difference somewhat.

From what I have read, the PS3 OS uses up a bit more system memory than the 360 OS does. There has been rumors that Sony bloated the OS on purpose to later squeeze down its footprint to give t he PS3 more life.

Some better optimization for the 360 and it should be able to run the D3/Q4 engine fine. I did hear that there were some issue with Q4 on the 360.

The NV chip in the PS3 should make up for any shortcomings the Cell might pose in development process because they are used to that kind of chip. However if they scrap most of that code black to help the 360, that might not be the case. We will have to wait and find out.
