Default Problems with 2.6.20 and SLI

Hi Everyone,

I have some problems after upgrading from kernel 2.6.18 to 2.6.20. After the upgrade my SLI Cards donīt work in SLI mode.
Here the output of my /var/log/xorg.log
--snip--
(WW) NVIDIA(0): DamageEvents are not currently compatible with SLI. Disabling
(WW) NVIDIA(0): DamageEvents.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to find a valid SLI configuration!
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Invalid SLI configuration 1 of 1:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): GPUs:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): 1) NVIDIA GPU at PCI:2:0:0
(EE) NVIDIA(0): 2) NVIDIA GPU at PCI:7:0:0
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Errors:
(EE) NVIDIA(0): - GPU video memory sizes do not match
(WW) NVIDIA(0): Failed to find a valid SLI configuration for the NVIDIA
(WW) NVIDIA(0): graphics device PCI:2:0:0. Only one GPU will be used for
(WW) NVIDIA(0): this X screen. Please see Appendix W: SLI and MultiGPU
--snap--

The error is very funny, because both cards are exact the same.
lspci:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G70 [GeForce 7600 GT] (rev a1)
07:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G70 [GeForce 7600 GT] (rev a1)

I use the latest nvidia driver 9749. And as I told before, with the 2.6.18 everything is working fine. But I need to use the 2.6.20 kernel, because I need the new ALSA version included in 2.6.20.

Any Ideas?

Geetings

Robert
P.S. What are "Damage Events?"

P.P.S. Hereīs my xorg.conf:

Actually, what is needed is an nvidia-bug-report.log, which you did not attach.

Thanks,
Lonni

This looks like a PCI bus /proc/mtrr problem (potentially specific to your hardware). If you look at the bug report you attached you'll see the the memory ranges that are defined for each of the two cards are different. One has 256MB, while the other is getting 1GB (which looks wrong):

02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G70 [GeForce 7600 GT] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Unknown device 81f7
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at fa000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
Memory at 80000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=1024M]
Memory at fb000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
I/O ports at 9c00 [size=128]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at fcfe0000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [60] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [68] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable-
Capabilities: [78] Express Endpoint IRQ 0

07:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G70 [GeForce 7600 GT] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA])
Subsystem: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. Unknown device 81f7
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at f7000000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
Memory at e0000000 (64-bit, prefetchable) [size=256M]
Memory at f8000000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16M]
I/O ports at 7c00 [disabled] [size=128]
[virtual] Expansion ROM at f9000000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [60] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [68] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable-
Capabilities: [78] Express Endpoint IRQ 0

This isn't an nvidia driver bug, its an issue somewhere in the kernel and/or BIOS of the motherboard you're using.

Thanks,
Lonni

OK. I see the problem.

I forget to compile mtrr to the kernel.
But it was useless. The memory is still false deteced.

I also upgraded my BIOS (MB is ASUS M2N32-SLI DELUXE) to the newest version, but no change. Strange, because with an older kernel (2.6.18) everything is running fine...

Has anybody an running .config for 2.6.20 and enabled SLI?

Greetings

Default Solution

Here is the Solution:

donīt use the latest nvidida driver (9746),
but the older one 9631.

The different output of memory by lspci still happens, but the driver does not care...
