Default geforce 7900 GS - memory speed and glxgears

I'm using the restricted drivers that come with Ubuntu but
the nvidia_new module and nvidia-glx-new package. These
are driver version 1.0.9755.

The card I bought is supposed to have a 1.6GHz memory clock.
But when I run nvidia-settings, it is set to 800 MHz and the highest
I can set it is 960 MHz.

And when I run glxgears, I get the following:

301 frames in 5.0 seconds = 60.124 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.767 FPS
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.775 FPS

WTF?

Games seem to run ok - not super, but do appear to be
accelerated. And my Xorg.0.log indicates that GLX
is running.

The memory is DDR2. You likely have __GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK turned on.

Thank you so much for the __GL_SYNC_TO_VBLANK insight!
I don't understand what the memory being DDR2 has to do
with anything, though - it is actually DDR3.

Are you saying this is expected behavior? That somehow
setting memory speed to 800MHz in nvidia-settings is
effectively 1600MHz?

Yes, I'd expect an 800Mhz memory clock to be 1600Mhz DDR2. Also make sure that you're not confusing memory & GPU clock speeds.

Cool, thanks. The GPU is 600MHz and the memory clock is 800MHz.
