m2n-pvvm line-in sound recording woes

I put together a M2NPV-VM box to build a DVR. I am trying to record line-in audio on linux-2.6.20 with the snd-hda-intel driver for nforce MCP 430/Soundmax AD1986A built in sound. I am using the AC97 connections on the mobo and bios settings for the same (that is, the bios is _not_ set for HD-audio). The front panel mic as well as the back panel line/in mic/in does not seem to work!! Has anyone had any luck with sound recording on these boards? The sound playback seems fine.

Btw, how can the board tell if a given jack is being used in as line-in or for 5.1 audio?
