When you say UAC runs, do you mean you get a prompt even though the icon doesn't show the shield, or no prompt and not shield?

Quake 4 will prompt for permission if you have Punkbuster installed. If you only play single player and don't install PB, you won't get the prompt.

Did some playing around to find out why Quake 4 prompts for permission and I found that if you right click on whatever Q4 icon you use to launch it, select Properties, click on Advanced (on the Shortcut tab), and uncheck "Run as Administrator" it won't issue the prompt.

At least, that's what works for me. ymmv.

That's strange, or maybe i'm strange, or both ... I though that when you check run as admin you would be less likely to get the prompt.

My shortcut is just as it came with the game

Don't need to go to compatibility, I don't see a shield, I don't get a dialogue from UAC, it just runs as it did on XP (patch 1.3)

Seems like that's how it should work. Though I guess when you tell it to run as admin you're telling it to use elevated priveledges. Still, you should be able to authorize the priveledge elevation one time and not have it bug you after that.

Or maybe I'm weird too for thinking that way?

I'm pretty sure it does this because Quake4 goes out and pings ID's server with your key every time you start the game. In XP you don't really see it but it would light up my security. I got so sick of it I blocked the server in my host file a long time ago. I think R6V does this also. That's what your granting permission for. I haven't even installed it in vista yet.

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc Host

XXX.XXX.XXX.XX q4master.idsoftware.com #block q4server
Same with Prey
